FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Good morning, McKinley Families!
I hope you are enjoying the slightly cooler weather and a slower start to your Sunday!
This Friday, October 16, from 8:45–9:30 a.m., we will celebrate our outstanding new administration and classroom building with an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony! Although we have been using the building since the start of the school year, a building this special deserves a celebration! A ribbon cutting is a tradition that marks the opening of a new space and recognizes the people who made it possible. Our new building was made possible through the support of Santa Monica voters who invested in our schools, and we hope you will join us to celebrate this incredible investment in our students and community.
We will gather in front of McKinley with school and district staff, community partners, and families as our students cut the ribbon alongside district leaders. Families attending should follow their usual morning drop-off routine and then make their way to the front of the school to gather for the ceremony, which begins at 8:45 a.m. The school parking lot will NOT be available for event parking, and Chelsea Avenue will close to traffic after morning drop-off. If you are driving to the event, please park on surrounding streets and walk to the front of campus.
We look forward to celebrating with you!
In partnership,
Principal DW

The Great California ShakeOut – 10/15 at 10:15am
This Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m., McKinley will join schools across California in participating in The Great California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. This annual event is an important opportunity for our students and staff to practice responding safely and effectively during an earthquake and to strengthen our school's emergency preparedness.
How We Prepare at McKinley
Safety is a priority at McKinley, and we practice emergency procedures throughout the year. Our students participate in monthly fire drills, three earthquake drills, and two shelter-in-place/lockdown drills annually. Students have already participated in both a fire drill and a shelter-in-place drill this school year.
Every classroom has a red emergency backpack containing first aid supplies, walkie-talkies, and emergency documents. We also maintain a large emergency supply bin on the yard stocked with food, water, search and rescue equipment, and other essential supplies. All staff receive training in emergency procedures and have assigned responsibilities in the event of an emergency.
What Will Happen During the Great ShakeOut?
At 10:15 a.m., students and staff will practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" for at least 60 seconds before safely evacuating to our designated assembly areas. Once outside, we will account for all students and activate our emergency response teams, including first aid, search and rescue, and student reunification. We will also coordinate with the district's Emergency Operations Center to practice our communication and response procedures.
Please note: Our school office will be closed from 10:15–11:15 a.m. during the drill. We ask families to avoid coming to campus during this time whenever possible.
Emergency Student Reunification
In an actual emergency, we may need to implement our student reunification procedures. Families would report to two designated gates:
Request Gate – Arizona Avenue: Families check in and request their child.
Reunion Gate – Parking Lot Gate: Families are reunited with their child once it is safe and the release process is complete.
Please review our Emergency Pickup Map and Off-Campus Evacuation Map so you are familiar with these locations. Specific instructions will be communicated during an actual emergency based on the circumstances.
How We Will Communicate in an Emergency
In the event of an emergency, McKinley and SMMUSD will communicate important information through ParentSquare via phone calls, emails, text messages, and/or push notifications.
We strongly encourage families to download the free ParentSquare app to receive push notifications directly on their phones. You can also follow @McKinleyLions and @SMMUSD on X for updates and sign up for the City of Santa Monica's emergency alerts at SM Alerts.
Please also take a moment to review your emergency contacts in Aeries. This information is essential for contacting families and determining who is authorized to pick up your child in an emergency. You can add emergency contacts through the Aeries Parent Portal or contact our front office for assistance.
How Families Can Prepare at Home
The Great ShakeOut is also a wonderful opportunity to review your family's emergency plan. Talk with your children about what to do during an earthquake, identify who would pick them up in an emergency, and check your household emergency supplies. You can even practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" together! Learn more about earthquake safety here.
While we hope never to need these procedures in a real emergency, practicing together helps ensure that our entire McKinley community is prepared, informed, and ready to respond.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our Lions safe!
