A Busy Week in Dragon Country!
Dear Family and Friends,
What an exciting week we’ve had at Daniel J. Bakie Elementary! Our school has been buzzing with learning, celebrations, and special visitors, and our Dragons continue to show us how we are Better Together in Dragon Country!
Celebrating Cooperation! 💙
We kicked off our first CARES assembly of the year, recognizing 16 students for demonstrating Cooperation! We were so proud to celebrate these Dragons for working together, helping others, and being great teammates. Our next CARES focus will be Assertion—learning to speak up for ourselves, share our ideas, and advocate for what we need in respectful and positive ways. We look forward to seeing our students continue to grow and shine!
The Harlem Wizards Are Coming!
Our students were absolutely thrilled to meet Big J, a Harlem Wizard, who visited Bakie to kick off our WizFit Challenge! There was so much excitement and energy throughout the building as we got ready for this special experience.
Save the Date: November 17! Get ready for an evening of fun as the staff of Memorial and Bakie take on the Harlem Wizards! We hope to see our Dragon families there to cheer us on. More details will be shared soon!
Fire Safety with Kingston Fire Rescue!
A big thank-you to Kingston Fire Rescue for visiting Bakie in celebration of Fire Safety Month! Our first graders loved getting an up-close look at the fire truck and emergency vehicle and learning more about the important work our local firefighters do to keep our community safe.
Unfortunately, the firefighters received an emergency call before our kindergarten students had their turn to visit. We are grateful that they plan to return on another day so our kindergarten Dragons can enjoy this special experience, too!
As we head into another week, thank you for being such an important part of our Bakie community. Whether we are celebrating student accomplishments, building new skills, or welcoming community helpers, we know that the best things happen when we work together.
Have a wonderful weekend, Dragon families!

Grade 2
We are entering our ninth week of school and our second graders have accomplished so much! We have officially completed three math topics. Currently, we are continuing to practice adding and subtracting larger numbers using various strategies. We are diving into our third knowledge domain, which is an all time favorite; Legends and Heroes: Greek Myths. Families might even find themselves connecting with these classic stories. Long ago, ancient people used these very myths to explain the world around them.
Second graders are also working diligently in Reading Skills Two. In kindergarten and
first grade, students built a strong foundation by learning basic letter-sound relationships and matching vowels to their primary sounds. In second grade, we take this a step further by exploring alternate spellings for vowel sounds.spellings for vowel sounds (like how the /a/ sound can be spelled as ai in "rain," ay in "play," or a_e in "make"). Using the Amplify CKLA curriculum, we help students navigate the tricky water of words that sound that same but are spelled differently. By mastering these rules, students can be successful in reading and spelling more words every day!
In Skills One, students read stories about “The Cat Bandit” who used inventive plans to
obtain food. In Skills Two, we are reading fables and trickster tales from “Mike’s Bedtime”.
Some of these are traditional stories, and some have a twist. Students have opportunities to
explore story elements of characters, setting, plot, and morals. Readers also practice their
writing skills by retelling these tales, and developing sentences using description. The
stories, which feature new vocabulary and phrases, are enhanced by colorful and imaginative
Illustrations.
