Bettendorf Middle School students contributed to the 8th-grade art class mural during the third quarter, centered on the theme “You Matter.” Each student submitted meaningful words and phrases that were incorporated into the final design. Lead artist Jillian Hirl, known for her consistent dedication to daily sketching, thoughtfully brought these student voices together through the mural’s design.

School Safety Reminder School Safety Reminder

Keeping students and staff safe is our top priority!

We work with our students to prepare them for potential safety scenarios through drills and conversations. You may recognize many of our safety procedures:

Hold! Clear the Halls. Students remain in their classroom or proceed to a classroom area with supervision.

Shelter! Stay inside and follow severe weather or tornado protocols.

Secure! Get inside the school. If possible, school activities continue. Entrance to the school is more closely monitored.

Evacuate! Need to leave the school building - gas leak, fire, armed intruder.

Lockdown! Students and staff secure in classrooms due to a potential threat: lock doors, turn off lights, and get out of sight.

Run! Hide! Fight! - Response options during an armed intruder situation.

Prevention & Preparedness

Keep your emergency contact information up-to-date in Infinite Campus.

In an Emergency

  • Keep phone lines open for emergency responders. Please do not call the school. You will receive a message from the district/school as soon as information is available.

  • Do not call your child’s cell phone. Depending on the situation, a phone call could impact the safety of our students and staff.

  • Do not drive to the school unless the district has contacted you to pick up your student.

School access routes and entrance areas need to remain clear for emergency vehicles.

  • Picking Up Your Student from Family Reunification? Bring a photo ID for verification.

Camps at SAU (9th-12th Graders)

NEW for 2026: Applied Generative Artificial Intelligence Camp for students entering grades 9-12 in the fall.

This immersive one-week summer camp introduces high school students to how modern artificial intelligence systems actually work, using industry-grade tools from NVIDIA. Students explore generative AI technologies such as large language models and image generation through hands-on experimentation, learning how text and images are transformed into data, how models learn patterns, and why GPUs are critical to modern AI. Beyond building and testing AI-powered applications, students examine ethical issues including bias, privacy, misinformation, and responsible use. No prior programming experience is required. By the end of the week, students will be able to explain, evaluate, and responsibly use AI systems while gaining insight into real-world AI careers and pathways. Register at SAU.edu/camps.

Meet Ernie, our new BCSD Therapy Dog. Thanks to a generous gift from the Give Like Charly Foundation, which is funded in memory of BHS '22 grad Charly Erpelding, Ernie joined the BCSD Therapy Dog Program to support staff and students all around BCSD.

Charly was known for her positive mindset and being a wonderful friend to all and that is exactly Ernie's purpose in his job. Ernie will be working all around BCSD with Mrs. Hoyt. This week he visited students and staff at Bettendorf Middle School and Bettendorf High School. #BETTerTogether
