First of all, thank you to all the families who completed this survey way back in January 2022. 28% of families took part, higher than the STAR average of 25%, across all year groups.

In response to the main points raised, we drew up an action plan to show what we were doing in school and we have been monitoring this.

This letter is a brief summary of this, covering the main themes and how we have been moving forward with them. We have included the scores given for the school, and the STAR MAT range of scores.

You wanted more effective communication &

information about your children’s learning

School score 3.61/5

Other STAR schools lowest score 3.5/5

Other STAR schools highest score 4.14/5

We did...

  • Parent consultations by video call (not ideal but we worked through some technical hitches)
  • A book look/open classroom session at the end of the spring term. Feedback on this was so positive that we will make it a termly event
  • Introduced Class Dojo for quick & visual updates on learning, including photos of work/activities in class. Lots of you attended our drop-in intro workshop session on how to use it
  • Introduced Times Table Rock Stars and Numbots to support maths at home
  • Accessed the National Tutoring Programme for 30 sessions of intensive tuition for 60 children over the summer term
  • Returned to holding reviews of EHCPs (Education, Health & Care Plans), IPMs (individual Provision Maps) and Individual Risk Assessments in person, monitored by Mrs Stubbs as SENDco
  • Carried out and shared our short follow up survey at school level ('Your Child's Learning') which showed very positive responses

You wanted reassurance that staff are managing behaviour, including bullying, consistently and effectively

School score 3.88/5

Other STAR schools lowest score 3.68/5

Other STAR schools highest score 4.17/5

We did...

  • Set up some clear procedures for staff to ensure that parents are informed clearly and promptly of significant incidents
  • Held workshop sessions for staff around using CPOMS (Child Protection Online Management System) to record these incidents, including follow-up actions, so these can be tracked properly
  • Reviewed school approaches to behaviour and interventions around Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • All staff accessed training in Emotion Coaching approaches through our MAT Educational Psychologist
  • Set up Thrive in the Hive @lunch to provide additional support over lunchtime for children who need this
  • This term we will be carrying out pupil voice work around behaviour and feeling safe with children across the school
  • A school review day carried out in March by Ian Yapp (STAR CEO) and Shan Brough-Jones (STAR School Improvement Lead) reported on excellent behaviour for learning and attitudes, and raised no concerns around pupil well-being
  • We discussed reviewing the Behaviour Policy at the governors' meeting in May. The governors felt that there had previously been issues over too many changes to this policy and these had a negative impact on behaviour across the school. We agreed to simplify/clarify the existing policy instead, and this will be shared with families in draft form

You wanted more opportunities for parental engagement and use of the school environment. The lowest scores in this section were around families feeling informed, and about extra-curricular activities

School score 3.56/5

Other STAR schools lowest score 3.55/5

Other STAR schools highest score 4.31/5

We did...

  • Ensured that families were welcome back on site from February 2022, and could join us for the Easter Services and other events such as the book look & visits to school
  • Started to build up our extra curricular offer, with Y6 SATs club, football club & matches, craft club, netball club, athletics club, art club
  • Planned enrichment events such as visits and visitors
  • Shared dates about key events so families are aware of these
  • Shared key information about staffing changes and recruitment
  • Celebrate successes at all levels through the weekly newsletter
  • Carried out planning work and established after school care from June 2022 in response to families' needs: this has been extremely popular so far
  • Supported the PTA in setting up events for children and families such as the Easter tombola and the Summer Fair, with school representation on the group
  • Signposted families to offers and activities from other providers, such as Selby Library and St Wilf's
We hope this shows that we have looked at all the feedback given and worked hard to move forward. The last 2 years have been a real challenge for the school and we have already had so much positive change since January. Once again, thank you all so much for your support for our work.
