***This year SILVER coins are “positive” points and pennies will take away points.***

Here’s how it works:

  • Containers will be available in the cafeteria during lunch.

  • Each silver coin counts as positive points for YOUR grade level. (e.g. quarter is worth 25 points)

  • Each penny counts as negative points for OTHER grades.

  • At the end of the day on Friday, January 30th, all change/points will be tallied and the classroom with the most points will win a sundae party. (Winners will be announced on Monday, February 2)

Sick Student Guidelines Sick Student Guidelines

Dear Wayne-Westland Families,

As the winter weather progresses and we spend more time indoors, illnesses continue to thrive. We are seeing a rise in the number of ill students and staff. If your child exhibits symptoms of an illness, keeping them home from school is essential.

Below is a reminder of the district health policies. The MDHHS (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services) recommends, and the district requests, that children stay home from school during any of the following conditions:

  • Fever: A child has a temperature of 100.4°F taken by mouth or 99.4°F taken under the arm. The child will be sent home. The child should not return until 24 hours have passed with no fever and no use of fever-reducing medications.

  • Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools, even if there are no other signs of illness. The child will be sent home. The child should have no loose stools for 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Vomiting: A child who is vomiting will be sent home. The child should have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours before returning to school. (Exception: a healthcare provider has determined that the vomiting is due to a noninfectious condition such as an ulcer, anxiety, or pancreatitis.)

  • Strep Throat: Students should not return to school until 24 hours after the antimicrobial medications have been started.

Students who are sick do not learn effectively and if their bodies cannot rest, it will take longer to recover. In addition, students who are ill can affect many others due to the close contact and the large number of people with whom they interact.

We appreciate your understanding as we work together to keep everyone healthy.

Food Resources Food Resources

No Early Student Pick-up Between 2:45-3:20pm-Thank you No Early Student Pick-up Between 2:45-3:20pm-Thank you

There is no early student pick-up between 2:45 and 3:20pm unless it is an emergency. We respect that appointments or obligations will require you to pick-up your child(ren) early from school. If you have an appointment and you must pick-up your child early from school, please come before 2:45 pm. We dismiss 450 students at 3:20 pm and all staff are involved in making sure we have a safe dismissal. It is very challenging to find available staff to get a student early from their classroom and bring them to the office between 2:45 and 3:20 pm. Please do not pick-up children between 2:45 and 3:20pm. Thank you for your continued support.

Important-Talk With Your Child About Threats Important-Talk With Your Child About Threats

All school age kids need to be aware that threats are not permitted and that schools take threats very seriously. We encourage you to have conversations with your child(ren) about the seriousness of making a threat. Kids will often imitate video games, YouTube videos, social media videos, movies...etc. Written threats, verbal threats, digital threats, hand gesture gun motions and any other threat will be taken seriously. An investigation will take place immediately and minimally a threat assessment conducted by the school will be required for the student to return to school. Law enforcement may be involved.

If your child receives a threat or is a witness to someone making a threat, please instruct them to tell a staff member right away.

This link Prosecutor Worthy School Threat Letter 2025 (English).pdf is an important letter from Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy reminding families that any student who makes a threat of violence toward their school or district - whether intended as a prank or not - may face serious legal consequences. Under Michigan law, it is a crime to make a threat against a school or district, even if the person had no intent or capability to carry it out.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools takes all threats seriously and will work closely with law enforcement to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Free Gun Locks Free Gun Locks

Student safety is a top priority in Wayne-Westland Community Schools, both at school and at home.

Thanks to the Michigan State Police, we have FREE gun locks available for staff and families. Pick one up at any school office or the district office—no questions asked.

A new Michigan law requires firearms to be stored safely, away from children and teens. This means:

  • Locking them in a secure storage box, or

  • Keeping them unloaded and using a locking device.

Safe storage saves lives. Thanks for helping keep our kids safe.

Nut Restrictive

  • We are a “NUT RESTRICTIVE” school. You are not permitted to bring any nut products to school or buses. We will always support the safety of our Roadrunners. As a result of a Roadrunner having a serious nut allergy condition, we are now officially a NUT RESTRICTIVE school. Any exposure to peanuts or nuts through contact or ingestion can cause a severe life threatening reaction. If your child has eaten peanuts, peanut butter, or nuts prior to coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to entering the school. It is important that no nuts or food items that contain nuts are brought into our school or buses. Thank you for your assistance in providing our students with a safe learning environment. Nut Free Snack Options
  • Breakfast and lunch is free for all students: Menu-https://www.wwcsd.net/schools/elementary-schools/roosevelt/lunch-menus/

Fish and Shellfish Restrictive

  • We are a fish and shellfish restrictive school. No fish or shellfish products are permitted at school or on buses. We will always support the safety of our Roadrunners. Do not bring fish and shellfish products to school such as tuna fish and sushi.

Thank you for your support.

Birthday and Holiday Snacks Birthday and Holiday Snacks

Birthdays and holidays are very important. We understand and respect that parents want to send things to classrooms to celebrate birthdays. We encourage families to send fun pencils, books, fun markers, stickers...etc. In the spirit of safety, do not send food items such as cupcakes and cookies to celebrate birthdays. We are a NUT RESTRICTIVE school. Thank you for supporting safety.

Safety Drills Safety Drills

We are committed to keeping our families informed about essential emergency preparedness procedures to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. This includes guidance on what actions to take (and what to avoid), the timeline to expect during a lockdown, and an overview of the safety drills conducted across our schools each year.

The District Crisis Team has developed these important documents and they are posted on our district website. We encourage all families to review this information to be fully prepared and informed.

Please take a few moments to go over these materials, so we can work together to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

Stranger Danger Tips Stranger Danger Tips

The purpose of this information is to act as a reminder to revisit safety discussions and review safety tips with your child(ren) at home. Student safety is our highest priority and we appreciate every one helping to keep each other safe. The intent of this communication is not to alarm children and families. The goal of this information is to provide tools for families and kids to feel safe and to be safe. Fortunately, we live in a society where most people are good-intentioned. However, there are some people in our society who take advantage of others and do bad things. For that reason, we need to be vigilant and cautious. If there were ever any reported stranger danger safety concerns in our Roosevelt-McGrath area, please know that the school would immediately send out a stranger danger email and voice message informing you of any safety concerns.

Here are some safety tip suggestions to help guide discussions with your children at home:

  • Think SAFETY first. Report any incident to your parents and/or school personnel, and most importantly, the police by calling 911.

  • Always walk with one or more fellow students when going to and from the bus stop or anywhere else.

  • Do not walk alone.

  • If a stranger approaches and attempts to have a conversation with you, do not respond to him or her. Don’t talk with them. By responding, you could encourage their actions.

  • Do not accept anything from a stranger.

  • Do not get in the vehicle of a stranger, regardless of what they tell you.

  • In the event a stranger pursues you, go to the nearest door and knock loudly, and yell, if necessary. While we would not typically knock on the door of someone we do not know, when a stranger is pursuing, we must take every action to ensure safety. Keep in mind, when you approach someone’s door, the stranger has no idea whether you know the people living in that residence. Such action alone may deter the stranger and prompt them to leave the scene immediately.

  • Additionally, please know that any teacher, school staff member, school bus driver, Wayne Westland or city service vehicle may also be a safety resource during these events.
