From the Principal:

Hello Middle School South Families,

As we move into the second week of April, our halls are buzzing with excitement for the many events and opportunities arriving this spring. We are particularly thrilled to gear up for Writer's Week 2026, featuring a visit from acclaimed author Erin Bow. This special week includes a variety of creative activities for our students, such as songwriting workshops and book bedazzling, and we even have evening events like needle-felting for families to enjoy together.

We also want to share that the deadline is approaching for students to order a yearbook for the 2025-2026 school year. Where we may have a few extras, the best way to ensure your student gets one is to order to by April 18, 2026.

We are so grateful for your continued partnership in making MSS a wonderful place for our students to learn and grow.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Anthony Dengler

Writers Week

Writer's Week 2026 is coming! Please see the attached flyer for information about the activities for that week!

Over the upcoming days, students will receive brochures in ELA class with more information about the activities planned for the week.

This year for Writers Week, we are excited to offer after-school events for our families and students that center around our featured author for the week, Erin Bow, and her novel Simon Sort of Says. To help these activities run smoothly, and to encourage conversations at home about reading, we require that at least one adult (age 18 or older) accompanies any student who will attend the following activity:

  • Needle felting on Thursday, April 23

The following activity does NOT require an adult to accompany participating students:

  • After-school writing workshop with our writer-in-residence, Mr. Nicky, on Wednesday, April 22

Please check Canvas announcements and the brochure in your student’s possession for Google sign-up forms as we approach the third week of April. We will have limited space for participation for these after-school events, so if you are interested, make sure you sign up right away!

Spring Survey Items

As we have done in the past, we will be offering students the opportunity to complete a brief needs assessment shortly after our return from break. We will additionally be combining this survey with our Portrait of a Graduate end of year exit ticket, as well as our annual student belonging/inclusion survey items, in order to streamline data collection efforts.

We are planning to collect this information the week of April 20th, and the survey should be minimally disruptive overall to your student’s schedule.

Athletics Information Regarding Important Documents and Registration

Needed Forms Prior to First Day of Activity/Tryout:

For students interested in trying out and participating in a sport, students must have the following:

  • Physical: All students participating in tryouts and a sport must have a current physical or sports physical on file. Physicals are good for one year and one month from the date the physical was conducted. Please check to make sure your physical is current prior to tryouts or the start of an athletic activity. The physical should be turned into the Nurse’s Office.

  • Emergency Information Form: Students must have a completed and signed Emergency Information Form for each activity they are trying out for/participating in. They will need to turn this form in to the coach or sponsor at the time of tryouts. If try-outs are not required, then the form should be turned in at the first meeting of the sport or activity.

All required medical forms and athletic schedules can be found on the Athletics & Activities website.

All registration for activities will be in ParentVUE and information about registration will be sent later this summer.
