Greetings, CCS Families!

Can you believe we're already nearing the end of the first quarter? It feels like we were just welcoming our students back to school! Over the past several weeks, I've had the opportunity to visit classrooms, connect with students and staff, and see firsthand the exciting things happening across Columbus City Schools.

October is National Principals Month, and we're continuing to celebrate the dedicated school leaders who show up each day ready to support our students, teachers, and families. Our principals wear many hats, and their leadership reaches far beyond the classroom. I hope you'll join me in taking a moment to thank your child's principal for everything they do to make our schools places where students can thrive academically.

We're also continuing our commitment to listening and engaging with our CCS community through our Empower Your Voice listening tour. These conversations let us hear directly from families, answer questions, and better understand what's happening in our schools. Your experiences, perspectives, and ideas are essential as we consider decisions that will shape the future of our District.

As part of these efforts, I'll be sitting down with students at South High School and Mifflin High School to hear about their experiences, what helps them feel a sense of belonging, and what they envision for their learning environments. I want our students to help shape the schools and learning opportunities that will support their dreams.

We're also hosting two community listening sessions, and I hope you'll join us!

  • Community Listening Tour – Mifflin Middle School
    Wednesday, Oct. 28 | 5 to 7 p.m.

  • Community Listening Tour – Marion-Franklin High School
    Monday, Nov. 2 | 5 to 7 p.m.

These conversations will focus on family-school partnerships and the priorities that matter most to our school communities.

And I want to hear from YOU! Join us at an upcoming listening session or one of Board President Miranda’s Sip Social coffee meetings. Bring your questions, share your concerns, and tell us what matters most to you and your family. You can also share your priorities for the coming year through our community input survey. Your voice is an important part of helping us make decisions that put our students first.

As we prepare for winter, I encourage families to check in on their child's progress through Infinite Campus. Review grades, attendance, and transportation plans, and talk with your child about their goals for the months ahead. And remember, every school day counts! Help us Strive for Five by making attendance a priority five days a week. Being in class every day helps students stay on track, strengthens learning, and supports our continued academic progress across CCS.

To our students, keep working hard, showing up, and giving your best each day. And to our families, thank you for continuing to partner with us and support your child's success.

The future of Columbus City Schools is shaped by the decisions we make today and the opportunities we create for every student tomorrow. I look forward to hearing your ideas, learning from your experiences, and working together to give our students the bright futures they deserve.

With Gratitude,

Dr. Angela Chapman
Superintendent/CEO, Columbus City Schools

Ahead of our Empower Your Voice Town Hall on Oct. 12, we invited CCS families and community members to test their knowledge with two true-or-false questions about student achievement across the District. The results are in! Let's take a look at how participants responded and the facts behind each question.

Question 1: CCS kindergarten test scores are higher than before COVID.

70% answered True | 30% answered False

The correct answer is TRUE! CCS kindergarten students are performing better on state assessments than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic. This progress reflects the continued focus on early learning and building strong academic foundations for our youngest learners.

Question 2: CCS reached a record graduation rate with the Class of 2026.

93% answered True | 7% answered False

The correct answer is TRUE! The CCS Class of 2026 achieved a record-high 84.6% four-year graduation rate, an increase from 81.4% in 2025! This milestone represents continued progress in helping more students graduate on time and prepare for opportunities beyond high school.

Thank you for testing your CCS knowledge! These are just two of the many academic achievements highlighted during our Empower Your Voice Town Hall. We encourage families to stay informed, ask questions, and continue engaging in conversations about our District's progress and future.

CCS families, we're turning up the heat on attendance this November!

Our next CCS Strive for 5! Attendance Challenge kicks off Monday, Oct. 26, and we're encouraging all CCS students and families to join us as we continue building strong attendance habits across the district!

This month's theme is "Heat Up Your Attendance!" As temperatures begin to drop, we're reminding students that showing up to school each day, arriving on time, and staying engaged in learning can make a big difference in their academic success.

CCS Strive for 5! Attendance Challenge

  • Challenge dates: Oct. 26 through Nov. 20

  • Winners announced: Nov. 30

  • Theme: Heat Up Your Attendance!

  • Key message: Bundle up, show up, and warm up your grades!

CCS families, let's keep the momentum going!

Strong routines at home support good attendance, and families play an important role in helping students succeed. Here are a few simple ways you can support your child throughout the challenge:

  • Make every school day count! Encourage your child to attend school every day they are healthy and ready to learn.

  • Start the day strong! Establish morning and bedtime routines that help your child arrive at school on time.

  • Celebrate progress! Recognize your child's efforts to improve attendance and build positive habits.

  • Stay connected! Talk with your child about what they're learning and reach out to their school if attendance challenges arise.

Throughout the challenge, schools will have opportunities to recognize students for their attendance, celebrate improvements, and encourage everyone to keep striving for success!

Let's celebrate our CCS attendance champions!

Congratulations to Olde Orchard Elementary School and Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys, our September Start Strong Attendance Challenge winners!

Drivers can help by staying alert, watching for flashing bus lights, and stopping for school bus stop arms.

We also want to give a special shoutout to our dedicated CCS bus drivers and transportation teams who work each day to get students to and from school safely. Thank you for all you do!
