Ms. Haga Updates
Visitor
Ann Ferrell, former middle school principal in Fulton, will be here for a few hours on Monday morning to visit. Ann was on the opening faculty of Crabapple in 1983 and is excited to see all of the changes. You may see Ann in the halls or dropping by classrooms. Just carry on - she is not evaluating anything…she's just visiting!
COPPA
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) prevents children under 13 from signing up for things online using a personal email address. This does not mean that students cannot do this, but it does mean that they should not and especially not without their parent’s permission. Please never ask students to enter a personal email address to sign up for something at school.
If you think you have a valid reason for requesting this, please reach out to Stephanie for approval. You will be required to get parental permission.
Staff Spotlight
Ms. Tina Cairo is an exceptional school social worker whose unwavering dedication and compassion make a huge impact on our students, families, and staff every day. Her ability to connect with students on a personal level, advocate for their needs, and provide a safe, supportive space is commendable. Whether she's coordinating resources, offering emotional support, or collaborating with our staff, Ms. Cairo approaches every challenge with a high-level of empathy, and professionalism. Her presence in our school community is a gift, and she is the type of advocate that every student deserves.

Media Center Update
- Book Fair Reminders: The CMS Book Fair will take place from 9/22-9/26. Students will visit the Book Fair via their World Language or Reading class. Access to checkouts and desktops will be limited during this time. Teacher Discount Coupons were put in your mailboxes last week. Thank you for your support!!!
- IN NEED OF PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS: If you have any plastic grocery bags that you would like to get rid of, please bring them to the Media Center early this week. We would like to have bags for the Book Fair if possible.
- Digital Citizenship:
- Teacher Requirements (due Oct 1st): CMS Digital Citizenship TEACHER REQUIREMENTS 2025-2026.docx (Link to Sign-Off form on the doc)
- Check out the video from Grade Level last week if you missed it. There are important instructions for the lessons given to students in homeroom this year.
- Be sure to follow the lesson plans linked in the homeroom plans the next few weeks (all due by Oct 1st).
- Form for Homeroom Teachers to Sign-Off once ALL 4 lessons have been taught:
- Rizo Copiers: The copiers were serviced this week. The maintenance tech said that if the paper you are trying to copy is very dark (has a lot of ink on it), that’s when jamming and misfeeding can occur. Just a tip for us. If it’s a very dark copy, then consider using the Sharp copiers instead.
PBIS Update
Thank you for holding tight to our expectations and modeling for your students what it means to Be Respectful, Be Engaged and Be Prepared! Here is our PBIS Rewards Engagement for the First 6 Weeks! The Goal of this color-coded report is to support our fellow teachers and calibrate our own engagement!
If you see a member of your PLC/Department who has gotten off track and may need some support, please reach out to them and share your successful strategies! If you have fallen a bit behind, it is never too late to re-introduce PBIS Rewards into your daily routine!
Reminders/Repeat Information Below:
Change in Work Hours
With the change to a 4:05pm dismissal and the late arrival of our buses, we are altering the staff work hours. You must be in your classroom or at your post by 8:25am each day. The work hours are 8:25am-4:25pm. Note: this does not mean walking in the door at 8:25pm. If we call buses at 4:20pm, you do not need to wait until 4:25pm to leave. We know how hard you are working. Hopefully there will be very few days we call for buses after 4:25pm, but as always, we do have to stay to keep the kids safe in these instances.
Minors and Subs
Please issue at minimum a minor referral to any student whose name is left by a substitute for poor behavior. Likewise, I encourage you to give PBIS points for any students or classes who do great for a sub. Please add something about this to your sub plans so they will know to leave names if needed. Also, please prepare your students for this and encourage them to be helpful and supportive while you are out.
Attendance
ALL IN ON ATTENDANCE – Building Strong Routines
Crabapple Middle School: In It to Win It!
- September is Attendance Awareness Month Across FCS. Below are some facts about attendance and staff reminders of how we can support a culture of attendance.
- September is the perfect time to set consistent morning and bedtime routines that make school attendance a natural habit. Students who start the year strong are more likely to maintain excellent attendance all year long.
- Students who miss fewer than 5 days in the first semester are 3 times more likely to stay on track in reading and math.
- Accurate Daily Attendance: By taking accurate attendance in each class period this sets a level of consistency among school staff, and creates an opportunity to discuss with parents the importance of consistent attendance and the impact on academics and school connection.
At FCS, Attendance Matters, All Day, Every Day, as we want each student to have the opportunity to meet their academic goals. Also, attending school regularly helps build relationships and connections, which impacts belonging to the school and the greater community.
How can we help create relationships and connections with our families?
- If a student misses three unexcused, consecutive days, teachers can reach out via email or phone call to connect with the parent/guardian This creates an opportunity for a dialogue to support the student’s academic goals and develop an ongoing relationship with the parent/guardian.
Best Buddies Club
Best Buddies is coming to Crabapple Middle!!
We are excited to launch the Best Buddies chapter at Crabapple Middle School this year! Best Buddies is an international organization that creates opportunities for friendship, inclusion, and leadership for students with and without disabilities.
To make this program a success, we are seeking staff advisors and volunteers from both general education and special education. Advisors help:
- Support students during meetings and events
- Foster connections between Peer Buddies and Buddies
- Encourage inclusion in our school community
- Share ideas to make activities engaging and meaningful
Your involvement can be as simple as helping with meetings a few times a year or taking on a more active advisor role—every bit of support makes a difference!
Please fill out the form using the link below and include details about your preferred level of involvement. This will help us plan roles and responsibilities that work for everyone's schedule. Best Buddy CMS- Staff Volunteer
Canvas
All grades MUST go in Canvas; no grades or assignments should be entered directly into Infinite Campus.
Some great tips:
- Turn on Nightly Sync:
- Grade sync-Utilities-flip switch for nightly sync
- Having Sync issues? Try a remaster!
Check out the visual instructions for both of those tips here as needed. Canvas Quick Tips.pptx
Teachers with High School Courses: you need to change the weights of your Majors from 50% to 55%, and minors from 40% to 35% in Canvas. See this link for instructions.
Teachers cannot add other teachers to courses. Rostered co-teachers will be automatically added.
If you need a new sandbox or someone added to an existing sandbox, please fill out the form with the sandbox URL and the email addresses of the individuals you want to add.
If you have a club or team that you want a course for, please fill out the form.
If you want to know more about Canvas tips/tricks/features, register for the FCS Canvas Resources Course. New modules are continually being added. If you weren’t able to attend a PD session, chances are it was recorded and included in this course. To register, use this link: https://fultonschools.instructure.com/enroll/FM3L6L

Sub. List
Attached is a work in progress but wanted to send it out for you to use while I continue to update. I will send a final once it is complete. If you are unfamiliar, this is a list of substitutes that we currently use, trust, and recommend. If you have an upcoming absence, we ask that you try and fill it with subs from this list and assign them in Frontline when you create the job.
All names and phone numbers in GREEN have been confirmed that they are working and available. If there is a YELLOW highlight in the first column, we have not yet confirmed their status for this year but feel free to call (and update me if you find out they do or do not want to be on our Sub list 😉)
