Fisher Family Update
May 16, 2025

Dear Fisher Families,
Today was a special day at Fisher School, filled with fun, laughter, and meaningful connections.
The entire day was centered around our buddy program, and we had a variety of exciting activities for both students and staff to enjoy.
We kicked things off with an impressive cereal box domino chain! Remember all those cereal boxes we asked for? Today, they were put to amazing use as we created a domino line that stretched from one end of the building to the other. Even better, all of these cereal boxes will now be donated to the Walpole Food Pantry to support local families—thank you so much for your generosity!
Next, buddy classrooms came together to share a special snack and enjoy some quality time. These classroom pairs have been connecting throughout the school year, and it was awesome to see the bonds they've built in action.
One of the highlights of the day was the surprise Inflatable Teacher Dash! Around 20 staff members suited up in hilarious inflatable costumes—from a roaring dinosaur to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man—and raced across the field. With blazing speed (and even more laughs), staff members raced from one end of the soccer field to the other! Be sure to check out the video below—and watch until the very end!
It was a day full of smiles, laughter, and school spirit. A huge thank you to all the staff who made this "SWIM" day such a memorable and successful event!
Have a good weekend,
Brian

Family Survey
You should have received—or will soon receive—an email invitation to participate in the Walpole Public Schools district-wide Family School Climate Survey. The purpose of the survey is to learn more about you and your child’s experiences in our schools. We have partnered with K12 Insight to administer the survey, gather responses, and analyze the feedback. The insights we collect will play a key role in guiding our School Councils as they develop School Improvement Plans for the upcoming year. We sincerely appreciate your input. Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us create the best possible learning environment for all students.

Dear Families!
It's time for Fisher's Spring Performances. Each Grade will have a 20 minute showcase of the skills they have learned in music this year. I will be videotaping all the performances, edit them, and then send links to all grade-level families for each performance. Please do not feel obligated to come, as it is only a 20-minute performance followed directly by all students leaving and going directly back to class to continue their school day. When you get the performance link, it may be a wonderful opportunity to sit down with your child/ren and watch it together! (Popcorn, maybe?)

Helping Your Child Visualize Math
When kids hear the word visualize at school, they often think about reading—picturing what’s happening in a story or using illustrations to understand the text. But visualization is just as important in math!
One of the key goals of our Bridges math program is helping students show their thinking. This might be through drawings, models, numbers, or words. When students can see the math by representing it in their own way, they develop a much deeper understanding—beyond just memorizing steps or rules.
As students learn new math ideas, they usually move through three stages:
Concrete – using physical objects (like blocks or counters) to explore the concept.
Representational – drawing a picture or model of the math.
Abstract – solving the problem using numbers or symbols, without needing visuals.
But learning doesn’t always follow this path in a straight line. Students might move back and forth between these stages depending on the problem. For example, they may solve a simple problem easily, but need visuals again when the numbers get more complex or involve fractions and decimals.
These days, math instruction focuses more on understanding and less on memorizing. Students are learning to break numbers apart (called decomposing) to make mental math easier. But sometimes students think this means they don’t need to show their work or use drawings. In fact, visualizing is one of the best tools they can use—especially when a problem feels tricky!
If your child is stuck on a math problem, here are two simple ways you can help:
Find something concrete they can use—like coins, Legos, buttons, or small toys—to act out the problem.
Encourage them to draw a picture of what’s happening in the problem. This helps them make sense of the situation and often leads them straight to the solution.
Bottom line: When students slow down and show their thinking, either through pictures or objects, it helps them see the math more clearly—and builds stronger understanding in the long run!
Check the Lost & Found!
As we approach the end of the school year, it’s time for a little spring cleaning—and that includes our very full Lost & Found! From jackets and sweatshirts to lunchboxes and water bottles, our collection has grown significantly.
We encourage students and families to stop by and take a look for any missing items. All unclaimed belongings will be donated after the last day of school, so be sure to check before it's too late!
Let’s wrap up the year with clear hallways—and reunited items!
