Our Learning Community...

We are excited for the First Day of School, tomorrow, August 11th!

Monday Morning Arrival:

  • Gates open at 7:30 am (5 minutes earlier than usual). We recommend allowing extra time, as the first day tends to be busier than normal!

  • Classroom assignments are currently available on the PowerSchool Parent Portal and will be posted alphabetically by last name Monday morning.

  • Families are welcome to walk their child to class to quickly meet the teacher and get a peek at the classroom.

  • At the 7:45 am bell, we ask that all good-byes be shared and families head to the auditorium for the PTA's Tears & Cheers event for coffee, refreshments, and a chance to connect with other Jones families.

Starting Tuesday, August 12th:

  • Morning drop-off will take place at the gates and families will say good-bye there.

  • Jones staff will be stationed at key points across campus to guide students to their classrooms.

  • Our youngest learners will have temporary colored wristbands on their backpacks to help identify classroom locations during the first days.

Helpful Resources Below:

  • Family Handbook

  • Teacher & Grade Level List

  • Campus Maps (arrival gates, dismissal gates, and classroom locations)

  • Summer Photos

  • PTA flyers with exciting upcoming events and don’t miss the “Looking Ahead” section so you can mark your calendar!

We are ready for an amazing year of learning, growth and connection. Thank you for your partnership, our community is what makes Jones an incredible place to learn!

Family Handbook... Family Handbook...

The Jones Family Handbook is an important resource designed to help families stay informed, connected and engaged throughout the school year. Inside, you will find key information about school policies, daily schedules, arrival and dismissal procedures, attendance expectations, communication tools and ways to get involved in our learning community.

Reading through the handbook ensures that everyone, students, families and staff, shares the same understanding of how we work together to support student success. It also answers many of the common questions that come up during the school year, helping us all create a smooth and consistent experience for our students.

While the digital version is linked here in the newsletter, a hard copy will be sent home with each student within the first two weeks of school for easy reference. We encourage you to keep it handy and refer back to it whenever needed.

Thank you for taking the time to read through the Family Handbook and for partnering with us to make this an incredible year for our students!

Get to Know the Jones Campus... Get to Know the Jones Campus...

To support a smooth start to the school year, we are sharing several helpful maps of our campus, including designated arrival gates and our dismissal gates by grade level. These visuals are here to make morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up clear and easy for everyone.

Please take a few moments to review them with your child before the first day. Knowing where to enter and exit will help reduce confusion and ensure a safe, calm start and end to the day.

As always, we’re here to help, reach out to our office at (619) 605-8800 if you have any questions!

Healthy Snack/Lunch

As you enjoy the last couple weeks of Summer Break, many families are already thinking about and planning for the new school year to begin. Here are some ideas of what will be helpful...

  • Backpack: Backpacks help get materials back and forth between school and home safely. Over the course of the year students will bring home school documents to sign and complete, flyers about events, class work, homework, etc. We have some backpacks available if you need one, please call our front office and we can set up a time for you to come pick it up before school starts.

  • Water bottle: We have water bottle filling stations and water fountains on campus, so a small child size water bottle is all that is needed if you would like your child to have one. Please do not send large, metal water bottles.

  • Snack: All classrooms take a mid-morning Wellness Break, this includes time to eat a snack if you would like to send one. Snacks should be an individual portion as students are not able to share snacks with others. If your child is used to frequent snacks throughout the day, this is a great time to start preparing for the transition to a more structured eating schedule that will set them up for success during the school day.

  • Lunch: A complete lunch from our cafe is free for all students, but you are also welcome to send a lunch with your child. Please send foods that will fuel your child for an afternoon of learning, candy, soda, large bags of chips/cookies are not permitted. If you will be sending your child with food from home, this is also the time to start practicing opening the containers and/or packaging of the items you plan to send with them so that they can independently get started eating during snack/lunch times.

School Supplies School Supplies

zoom_out_map
As a public school, we will provide all books and materials needed for daily learning. You will not recieve a required "School Supply List" with numerous items to purchase and bring on the first day.

Over the summer supplies are ordered for each grade level based their specific need and our supply room is restocked for the school year. Crayons, markers, glue sticks, journals, scissors, paper, tissues, etc. are purchased with our site funding and will be provided for all of our students.

You may receive a wishlist of additional items that would support your child's classroom in general or for a special project, these donations are welcome, but never required.

While we do not need the basic supplies brought to school, we would encourage families to have some of these materials at home for children to explore and create with as an extension to learning.

  • Sleep: Sleep is an essential component for setting our students up for success. If your child's sleep schedule has changed over the summer, it is time to start preparing for the return to school. Sleep makes a huge difference in concentration, performance, and regulating emotions during the school day.

  • Morning Routine: Morning routines help develop your child's sense of self, responsibility, independence, focus, and helps them feel positive about the day ahead. Routines look different for every family and there are many resources on the internet that can help you create the best plan for your family that you can start practicing now. Students who get to school on time, ready to learn feel a stronger connection to their classroom community and are more prepared to transition through the daily schedule of their class.

  • Lunch Time: Students have 20 minutes to eat lunch, so this may be something your child needs to prepare for as well. If your child will be bringing their lunch to school, you should also have them practice opening and closing any food containers or packages that will be sent in their lunch box.

As we begin the new school year, we want to share an important update that supports our shared goal of helping every student thrive: San Diego Unified is implementing a Phone-Free School Day policy across all schools and all grades.

This policy is designed to minimize distractions, improve focus in the classroom, and support the mental wellness of our students. By keeping phones off and away during the school day, we are creating a learning environment where students can be fully present, build stronger connections with peers and educators, and stay focused on their academic success.

Check out the link to the policy below. We know that this takes partnership and we ask for your support in reinforcing these expectations with your child. Use the articles below to help you talk to them about the importance of staying engaged in class and remind them that they can always reach you through the front office in case of emergency.

Student Cell Phone Use

San Diego Unified School District has new guidelines for mobile phone use on school campuses to help to minimize student distractions, elevate academic performance and prioritize students' mental health and well-being. San Diego Unified’s guidelines were developed in accordance with California's Phone-Free School Act (Assembly Bill 3216), and after seeking significant input from students, parents, and educators. It was approved by the Board of Education on July 8, 2025 and will be in effect beginning  the first day of the 2025-26 school year.
