The Ridgeline Lottery and the Waitlist The Ridgeline Lottery and the Waitlist

Why Enrollment Matters (More Than You Think) Why Enrollment Matters (More Than You Think)

“Sustainable public Montessori programs open and available to all have the power to transform lives and societies for opportunity, peace, and justice.”

— National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector

WHY IT MATTERS WHY IT MATTERS

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why do we even have a lottery?” or “What does being a public charter school actually mean?”—you’re not alone. And if you’ve ever tried to explain it to a friend while having a playdate, you’re definitely not alone.

This Ridgeline Revealed is here to make the process feel clear, human, and transparent—and to share why stable enrollment is one of the quietest (and most important) ways we protect public Montessori at Ridgeline.

MYTH BUSTING: Quick Truths About Ridgeline’s Lottery MYTH BUSTING: Quick Truths About Ridgeline’s Lottery

Myth: The lottery means Ridgeline is selective.
Truth: An equitable lottery is the opposite of selective. Because we’re a tuition-free public charter school, we can’t screen students or decide who is a “fit.” When more families apply than we have seats, a lottery is the fairest way to offer enrollment.

Myth: Applying earlier gives you better odds.
Truth: As long as you apply before the deadline, you’re included in the lottery the same way.

Myth: If you’re on the waitlist, you’re stuck.

Truth: Waitlists often move—especially as families finalize plans in spring and summer. (More on that below.)

Myth: Once the school year starts, it’s “too disruptive” for a child to change schools—so it’s better not to consider a mid-year transition.

Truth: Children are often more resilient than we give them credit for, and with caring adults, steady routines, and a welcoming classroom community, most students settle in more quickly than families expect. When families are actively looking for a public Montessori program, a mid-year opening can be a wonderful opportunity to join as soon as space becomes available—without having to wait for next year’s lottery.

THE WHY: Values + Equity + Transparency THE WHY: Values + Equity + Transparency

Ridgeline is public, which means we’re committed to fair access and clear processes.

A lottery:

  • keeps admissions equitable when demand is high

  • creates a transparent, trackable process families can trust

  • supports the public mission of Montessori—a prepared environment that belongs to everyone, not just those who can pay for private options

Montessori is grounded in dignity, independence, and belonging. A public-school lottery is one of the ways we honor that: everyone gets a fair chance.

ENROLLMENT = STABILITY (And Stability Protects Montessori) ENROLLMENT = STABILITY (And Stability Protects Montessori)

Stable enrollment helps Ridgeline deliver stronger public Montessori—period.

When enrollment is healthy and steady, it supports:

  • consistent classroom communities (Montessori thrives on mixed ages, continuity, and relationships over time)

  • lower turnover and attrition, which strengthens culture and reduces disruption

  • predictable staffing and planning (the “prepared environment” isn’t only materials—it’s people and systems)

  • financial stability, because public school funding is tied directly to enrollment

In a Montessori school, community is part of the curriculum. A stable community gives children the safety and belonging they need to take healthy risks, practice responsibility, and grow into leadership.

So when families help us sustain enrollment, they’re not just filling seats. They’re helping protect:

  • our program quality

  • our classroom balance

  • the long-term strength of Ridgeline as a public Montessori community

WAITLIST REALITIES: What Families Often Don’t Know WAITLIST REALITIES: What Families Often Don’t Know

If your family or a friend is waitlisted, here’s the honest and encouraging truth:

  • Waitlists can move. Families accept other placements, plans change, and seats open—especially heading into summer.

  • Grade level matters. Some grades shift more than others depending on cohort size and openings.

  • Quick responses matter. When a seat becomes available, we typically need an answer within a short window so classroom communities can continue running smoothly.

The waitlist can feel emotional. We see that. The best thing prospective families can do is stay engaged, keep contact information current, and continue learning about Montessori while they wait.

RIGHT FIT WITHOUT GATEKEEPING: Come Learn With Us RIGHT FIT WITHOUT GATEKEEPING: Come Learn With Us

Ridgeline won’t screen families, but we do want families to grow in their understanding of Montessori—because the home-to-school partnership matters.

If someone is curious about applying, invite them to:

  • attend one of our February tour dates

  • learn what Montessori looks like day-to-day (independence, multi-age community, long work cycles, responsibility, grace & courtesy)

  • checkout ridgeline.org for lottery information and more about our program

This isn’t about “determining fit” or checking boxes. It’s about helping families step into Ridgeline with clarity—so children benefit from aligned expectations and steady support from kindergarten all the way through eighth grade.

Public Montessori works best when families come in saying: “We want this kind of learning—and we’re ready to grow into it.”

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Simple Ambassadorship That Matters HOW CAN YOU HELP? Simple Ambassadorship That Matters

The most effective ambassadors are warm, honest, and low-pressure.

1) Share your “why Ridgeline” story

If you’re comfortable, tell one simple truth about your experience.

2) Invite families to learn, not just apply

Encourage tours and info sessions. Montessori is easier to choose when you can picture it.

3) Share the basics about upcoming tours and our website

4) Normalize the waitlist

If someone is waitlisted, let them know it’s common and movement happens. Don’t get discouraged! The emotional reassurance matters.

5) Help us reach beyond our usual circles

Public Montessori should be visible and accessible to families across our whole community. Sharing enrollment information with neighbors, colleagues, and community groups expands access.

That’s it.

NUMBERS SNAPSHOT NUMBERS SNAPSHOT

A FINAL THOUGHT: Enrollment Is Stewardship A FINAL THOUGHT: Enrollment Is Stewardship

At Ridgeline, Montessori isn’t just a method—it’s a community practice.

When families help keep enrollment strong, they help protect:

  • classroom community and stability

  • program continuity

  • community culture

  • the long-term health of public Montessori in Eugene

Thank you for being part of that stewardship—whether you’re sharing the lottery link, inviting a neighbor to tour, or simply telling the story of why Ridgeline matters to your family, it all helps carry our community forward.
