Classroom/Home Tips or Strategies

Food Safety

  • Use Disposable food-safe gloves to protect your hands and food.
  • Make sure your food is done with safe touch and non-touch techniques

Food Prep

  • Use a desk or task lamp with a flexible arm to highlight or emphasize work area.
  • Different colored cutting boards (white/black) for higher contrast.
  • Try a pizza cutter or pastry cutter to assist with cutting and keeping hands safe.
  • Use a metal measuring spoons/cups, so that they can be bent into scooping or other more comfortable position. Talk to your OT for help!

Food, Cooking and Kitchen organization

  • Use magnets to label cans - When you use the item, add a magnet to the refrigerator to make a shopping list
  • Set up cooking surfaces with the student so that you know that students can reach/access all items in the work area.
  • Mask completed parts of the recipe.
  • Use picture recipes. Follow a cooking routine (the same every time!)
