Have You Noticed?

Have you noticed the awesome job our students did with the coding showcase? This could not happen without the support of the wonderful teachers they have! Thank you so much for giving your students the opportunity to learn coding and all the other experiences you afford your students each and every day.

A special thank you to our second grade team. They have divided Mrs. Smith's class to maintain consistent quality instruction during this time. Thank you for going over and beyond for this extended period of time.

Update on Second - While Mrs. Smith is out. In the true spirit of WKE family, Tonya Threatt will teach Mrs. Smith's class until Mrs. Smith is able to return. Words cannot express how grateful we are that she is willing to do what is in the best interest for these students. We appreciate you, Mrs. Threatt.

To that end, we will need your help with RTI students as we determine the new RTI schedule. Katie Harmon will send this schedule out this weekend. We ask for your flexibility as some RTI times will need to change.

You may have wondered - Jennifer McPhereson and Kim Shealy have not been as available to support us lately. They both have been supporting Mrs. Barker's class while she is out on maternity leave because her long term substitute is not currently certified. A requirement through Title One is that all students be taught by a certified teacher. Thank you for your understanding for this period of time.

Palmetto's Finest - Please take a moment to become familiar with the application that was submitted. You may access the application by clicking on the following link:

Hall Displays: Please update or begin placing student writing in page protectors in hallways. For those of you who have started this procedure, thank you. Remember, we value process over product. Grade level math walls also need to be on display at this time. As a gentle reminder, standards and or a simple description of the learning should be displayed as well.

New Furniture: A huge thank you for your support and flexibility through the exchange of old for new furniture. We do not take for granted the stress this has caused and appreciate your understanding through this process.

Next Week's Furniture Plan: Tuesday, October 29th - furniture movers will arrive around 2:30 to remove furniture from rooms: 310, 314, 405, 510, 511, 604, 606, 607, 705, 706, 710, 713

Wednesday October 30th - Nu- Idea will deliver furniture in the above rooms starting at 5.30 am on Wed. morning.

Literacy Corner

What a great learning opportunity we had with Kate Bishop this past week! I have heard a lot of positive feedback. In the coming weeks, think about how you can use what you learned from Kate to grow your readers. Please let me know how I can specifically support your next steps forward.

In our journey of always improving our practice, be reflective. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of writing is on display? What kind of writing is not on display?

  • If what we display in the hallways conveys a message about what we value in our school, what is the message here?

  • How is this seating in my room set to support independent writing?

  • How is the meeting area in my room set up for the whole class to comfortably come together for whole class minilessons?

  • Are kids using anchor charts? Which ones are most popular?

  • What systems are set up for kids to access writing supplies on their own?

  • Do I have a clear way of keeping conferring notes?

  • Do I leave students with an artifact and/or something to work on (a reading/writing goal)?
