President's Message
When Fear, Uncertainty, and Division Are the Tools, Unity Is Our Strength
During recent site visits, ATA heard from members who continue to face challenges in raising site concerns or seeking support from the Association. In some cases, administrators have expressed dissatisfaction with members simply for reaching out to ATA. These situations are troubling because they erode the trust and collaboration our schools depend on.
As a reminder, under the Educational Employment Relations Act (EERA), unions have the right to represent members in all matters covered by our Union Contract and labor law. Members also have the right to represent themselves or others and to participate in union activities. It is illegal to intimidate, discourage, threaten, or discriminate against members for engaging with ATA or exercising rights guaranteed under EERA.
ATA encourages members to address concerns directly with administrators whenever possible—but we also recognize that additional support is sometimes needed. That’s why your union exists: to stand beside you, ensure fairness, and protect your right to a professional voice in your workplace.
Over the years, we’ve seen how open communication and collaboration can make a real difference in resolving challenges. True leadership values transparency, invites dialogue, and builds confidence through fairness. When educators feel safe to speak openly and seek support, morale strengthens and students benefit. If you believe you have been discouraged or restrained from contacting ATA or participating in union activities, please reach out to us right away. Together, we can ensure that every member feels safe, supported, and heard.

Know Your Contract: Class Size Notification Process for Elementary Schools
If your elementary class size exceeds 32 students—or if there’s a disproportionate number of students within your grade level—your contract gives you the right to request a Class Size Meeting.
Here’s what to do:
- Get a Class Size Letter right away (available from ATA or your site rep).
- Fill it out, make a copy for your records, and give it to your administrator.
- A meeting must then be held within seven working days of your written request.
At that meeting, you, your administrator, and any other affected teachers will discuss options to reduce the teacher–student ratio, which may include:
- Providing a classroom aide
- Forming combination classes
- Creating a team-teaching program
- Forming double sessions and adding a teacher
- Adding an additional teacher
Once class size reaches 34 students, the agreed-upon option must be implemented. The administrator’s decision cannot be arbitrary or capricious and must be provided in writing within five days of the meeting.
For complete language, see Article XIII, Section 2(d), page 40 of the current contract.
Important Reminder: Access Your Resources through Lincoln Financial's Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
As a reminder, all district employees have access to various resources through Lincoln Financial's Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The EAP offers numerous no-cost services, including counseling for financial matters, stress management, substance abuse, family issues, parenting, and more. For further information on how to access these services, please refer to the attached flyer. This program is available to all employees.
