Data Insights Issue 4 - California School Dashboard
Student achievement is the central purpose of our educational organization. Our district uses a whole child approach to gather a variety of data in order to monitor the overall growth of our students over time. Our fourth Data Insights report (Vol. 1, Issue 4) will highlight the 2024 California School Dashboard. The Dashboard is an online tool designed to help communities across the state access important information about schools and districts. The Dashboard features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success used to identify strengths and weaknesses and help ensure that the needs of all students are met. The Dashboard helps schools raise the bar for student learning, increase the focus on equity, and expand the review of performance data. To learn more about the 2024 Dashboard, please read Data Insights Issue 4 in the link below:
Vista Tree Lighting Ceremony
On December 8, 2024, our district celebrated the holiday season at the annual Tree Lighting event, showcasing the talents of 16 performing groups from 10 schools, spanning elementary, middle, and high school. Performances included choirs, ballet folklorico, mariachi, ukulele groups, hip hop dancers, string ensemble, tap, band, and a variety of instrumental ensembles. The festive evening featured a special appearance by Superintendent Dr. Matt Doyle, Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez, Council Members Joe Green and Dan O'Donnell, and VUSD School Board Members Martha Alvarado and Cipriano Vargas, making it a memorable community celebration.
Annual LCAP Development Process - Community Forums
Every school district in California is required to create a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) to outline the actions and services that support student achievement in academics, social development, and behavior. In our district, we call our LCAP the Blueprint for Educational Excellence and Innovation. Each year, the LCAP undergoes a comprehensive revision process to ensure that students, parents, teachers, and staff have the opportunity to provide input on existing actions and services and suggest new initiatives to help students reach their full potential as learners. To gather this valuable feedback, we are hosting community forums and conducting a district-wide survey. Please review the information below to share your voice and participate in this important process. Thank you!

2025 LCAP Community Survey - We have created a comprehensive survey to gather feedback from parents, staff, and community members. The survey includes a very short section to gather general feedback on our progress addressing the needs of students and families. There is an optional section that provides more detailed feedback about our progress on the LCAP goals we have set.
Magnet School Window and Application Process for 2025-26 School Year
Vista Unified is excited to offer magnet school experiences to any interested student. We are fully committed to ensuring that all families have an equitable opportunity to participate in the magnet school application process. Magnet schools are schools of choice that operate within the public school system and offer specialized programs or courses. In Vista Unified, we have five magnet schools serving elementary, middle, and high school students:
Elementary Magnet Schools
Secondary Magnet Schools
Please note VIDA’s location will change beginning in the 25-26 school year. VIDA will be located at 2245 Foothill Drive, Vista 92084.
For those families interested in one of our secondary magnet school options for the 25-26 school year, the window to apply is January 8, 2025 to February 21, 2025. It is important to note that the window for the middle and high school application submission is shorter than elementary because the master schedule development must be completed by spring in order for all course selections to be prepared for the new school year. Applications for the secondary magnet programs may be accessed on the Vista Unified School District website starting January 8, 2025.
The elementary magnet school application window has been extended to overlap with the kindergarten registration time frame. The extension of the elementary magnet school application window will provide families with more time to learn about and participate in the application process. For families interested in one of our elementary magnet schools, the window to apply for the 25-26 school year is January 8, 2025 to March 7, 2025. Applications for elementary magnet programs may be accessed on the Vista Unified School District website starting January 8, 2025.
Because space is limited at each magnet school, Vista Unified strives to provide a clear, fair, and balanced admissions process using a lottery system. This year, two lotteries will take place as noted below:
Secondary Magnet School Lottery: March 7, 2025 for Vista Magnet Middle School, Vista Innovation & Design Academy, and Mission Vista High School
Elementary Magnet School Lottery: March 14, 2025 for Casita Center for Science, Technology, and Math and Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts

Learning Over the Holiday Season
As we approach the winter break, we want to take a moment to wish all of our students and families a safe, joyful, and restful holiday season. While we encourage everyone to take time to relax and enjoy the break, we also want to share a few ideas and resources to help keep students engaged in learning over the holidays.
For many of our students, this break offers a great opportunity to explore new interests, build upon existing skills, and continue their educational journey in a fun and meaningful way. Here are a few ways families can support learning during the winter break:
1. Reading & Storytelling - Encourage students to read for at least 15-30 minutes each day. Whether it's a book, magazine, or even an audiobook, reading keeps minds engaged and improves literacy skills. You might also consider family storytime or discussing the stories you’re reading together.
2. Educational Activities & Games - Learning doesn’t have to be limited to the classroom! There are many fun educational games, puzzles, and apps that can help develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Try out activities that involve math, science, or art to continue sparking curiosity.
3. Exploring the Outdoors - Winter break is a great time to get outside and enjoy nature. A walk in the park or a hike can offer opportunities for science discussions, physical activity, and family bonding.
4. Holiday Projects - Consider doing a holiday-themed learning project as a family—perhaps cooking or baking together (math and science!), creating homemade cards (arts and crafts), or even volunteering to give back to the community.
We understand that the holidays are a time for rest, and we want to honor that. At the same time, nurturing a love for learning and encouraging students to see the value in everyday experiences helps to foster lifelong learning.
