Math

Here is another idea you could use periodically for changing up your Number Sense Routines.

Picture It focuses on magnitude and estimation. This routine helps students see that numbers are all around us by integrating pictures to spark discussion. Have students use observations to help make assumptions based on quantitative reasoning. For example, why do we choose a certain checkout line in a store over another? Do you choose based on the number of people or the amount of groceries that need to be scanned by each cart? Picture It challenges students to examine a picture, analyze possibilities and reason through their understanding. You will notice that in many of the examples, students are asked to look at the math within the picture. Then through your discussion, you can push the conversation in the direction you want.

Here are some examples to get you started.

This is taken from Daily Routines to Jump-Start Math Class.
