DECEMBER Guidance Lessons

Happy Holidays!! ☃️

I am so very grateful to have the opportunity to spend time with all of our students at YES! They brighten my day, everyday.

This time of year makes me so nostalgic! I think back to my childhood and the wonderful memories that I have with my family. Then I start thinking of the traditions I want to start with my own family that I have created! What a cool conversation to have with your children, what kind of traditions do they want to start?

This month in guidance lessons, we will begin to focus and learn more about our emotions and the emotions of others.

In K-2 we are learning that we can get clues about how others feel by focusing on their face and their body. In 3-5 we are learning about compassion, understanding other's perspectives, and how to disagree respectfully.

Community Resource Spotlight- Holiday Assistance

Wise County Toy Run and the Decatur Santa Cops Programs are two community programs that help provide holiday assistance to families in Wise County!

The Live Thankfully food drive is a wonderful cause supported locally buy schools and businesses that receive donations and put food boxes together for those who may be struggling to provide food for their family this time of year.

We are very grateful to those organizations, they make Christmas magical for so many!

Coping skill

Sometimes kids can feel those BIG feelings, but they can't quite put their finger on the word for what it is they are feeling inside...This is where the "Feel Wheel" can be helpful! It starts with basic feelings in the middle and then expands to more specific feelings on he outside of the wheel. The more specific you can get with a feeling, the more targeted the strategies can be when we are trying to help children move through those uncomfortable feelings.

This can also help kids "name it to tame it!" Once they can identify their feeling and find ways to cope with it, the less power it has over them.
