5 Things to Know Weekly Update
November 18, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
This week is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, with several workshops going on for students AND a drawing for gift boxes on Wednesday – there is still time to put together a box for students (just get it to Financial Aid by Tuesday at 4 p.m.) My boxes are really unimaginative, so don’t be shy to make one – students need food, warm clothing, toiletries, kitchen items, etc. In this season of giving, we need to include students as well as our families. And bundle up….it’s getting chilly.

So many great events to recognize from last week, starting with the (hopefully annual) Psych Day, which had about 300 participants – thank you so much to Amy Jennings and Kyle Smith for putting it together!
Tom Amen’s play, Inspecting Carol, was fantastic as usual – but incredibly funny, too, which was NOT usual! Thank you, Tom.
Congratulations to all of our coaches and student-athletes, and particularly Nick Mitchell, John Shipp and all the football coaches for another great season and coming within one touchdown of beating Mt. SAC this past weekend (we will have more news about post-season soon).
Biology professor Annamaria Crescimanno invited former GWC students back to the College for a career panel. It's always wonderful to see our alumni connecting with our current students to show them what's possible!
And last but certainly not least, we honored our student veterans and all veterans with a moving ceremony last Tuesday, thanks to Logan Shreve, Joseph Torrez, the Police Academy and the other participants.
Last Saturday, the Patrons, a division of the Foundation which includes many former employees such as Wes Bryan (also known as Number Seven), held a very successful movie night to raise money for student scholarships. We remain very grateful to their president Marcelle Capps and the entire group for their selfless dedication to the College and our students, and they should have raised a good amount from the event (including from my husband, who never met a silent auction item he didn’t like).
Thank you, Patrons, as well as Ryan Chung, Andrea Rangno, Kristen Hill, Danielle Mar and student assistant Andrew Hathaway who were out in force on Saturday!
Coming up this week, in addition to Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Events, we have two events from the HSI Title V/STEM Grant Team, led by Sacha Moore:
- A Kaiser Permanente Career Panel will take place on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5-6:15 p.m. in the GWC STEM Center. Panelists will include a psychiatrist, a nursing practitioner, a family physician, and two dietitians. This event is free, and food and drinks will be provided. RSVP is required.
- As part of a financial literacy series the Raices program will host a "How to Shop on a Budget" event on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 2-3 p.m. MPR 100. A second session -- "Money Moves: College Budgeting 101" -- will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
The Student Health Center is also sponsoring a workshop on how to improve sleep quality featuring guest speaker Dr. Angela Lukowski, a professor of psychological science at UC Irvine. This will take place on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in MPR 100 and students can register by emailing jmoss31@gwc.cccd.edu
Please encourage students to attend any (or all!) of these worthwhile events.
As with any college our size, we have a number of comings and goings all the time. Jennifer Ortberg will be leaving us at the end of December after 40 stellar years as A&R Director, so we will be starting a search soon along with the search for a permanent Math & Science Dean and acting Director of the Academic Success Center (while Cristina Oja fills in at Coastline this academic year). I am hoping to finalize our search for Foundation Director this week. We also welcomed Monica Prado to a new role at M&O – congratulations to her!
I will be here on campus all week and out all of next week (up in Utah), so catch me by Friday if you need anything. We should be finalizing drafts of Mission/Vision/Values and the new 2030 Facilities plan to share with the campus prior to Thanksgiving break, so keep an eye out for those.
