Hello from Principal Guditus

Hello Eddy Families,

We fast-forwarded this weekend through spring - it was summer-like this weekend! We even went for a swim this weekend. I hope that you had productive, relaxing, and fun weekends with your family and friends.

A reminder that there are Brewster municipal elections tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at the Brewster Baptist Church from 7am-8pm.

MCAS occurs this week for fifth grade only, on Tuesday and Wednesday for Math MCAS. MCAS make-up days for Science (5th only) and Math will be May 21 and 22. A student who missed one session will make this up on Thursday, 5/21; a student who missed two sessions will complete one make-up on Thursday and the second session on Friday.

The Great Eddy Reading Contest is underway! In fifth grade, Ms. Shanahan's class has surged ahead of Ms. Brekke's class; Mrs. Shevory's class has a slight lead over the other classes in fourth grade; in third grade, Mrs. Bellarosa's class has a slight lead over Ms. Gary's class. We are only mid-way through the month, so it is still anyone's trophy (and class prize) to earn! Please return slips for completed books to Mrs. Meyer's room asap and no later than June 1. The winner will be shared on June 2.

Our Spring Music & Arts Night at Eddy is next Wednesday, May 27, 2026 @ 6pm. We hope you can join us!

A big thank you to the Brewster PTO for their amazing Teacher Appreciation Week celebration! Our staff felt loved, and we appreciated all the snacks and food and thank yous! We love being educators at Eddy!

Here's to a great week of learning at Eddy!

Best,

Steve Guditus

Toys and fidgets at school

We have been having a lot of student conflict about fidgets and stuffed animals here at school this week. The number of fidgets and stuffed animals has grown in recent weeks and is becoming a distraction to learning. I am kindly requesting that you help with this by ensuring that students keep fidgets and stuffed animals at home. If your student needs to use a fidget at school, we have some here at school and your student can borrow one from their teacher.

Thank you for your help with this!

Volunteer Opportunities

We have two upcoming events for which we are seeking some volunteers. These are both one-time commitments:

  1. Two hours on Friday, May 29 from 10am-Noon to help with a fifth grade step up day at Nauset Regional Middle School for all rising sixth graders. 5th graders will have an opportunity to be at the middle school and participate in field-style activities to get to know future classmates next year, and we need help running stations. Everything you need, including directions, will be provided upon arrival. If you are able to help out, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C044BADAB23A4FBC61-63190316-5thgrade#/
  2. Eddy Field Day: Friday, June 5. We are looking for adults to run stations, supervise students, and help out. You can volunteer anywhere from an hour to all day, or anywhere in between. This is a very flexible way to see field day in action, interact with your student, and be a part of the fun. You can sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054EA8A62AA5FDC07-64081004-eddy#/

Fifth Grade End of Year Events

Please mark your calendars: three fifth grade end-of-year events:

  • Outer Cape Fifth Grade Dance @ Truro Central School, Friday 5/29 @ 5-7pm. New this year, Truro is inviting all fifth graders from Brewster to Provincetown, to join in a fifth grade social with a DJ, dancing, games, food, and drink. This is free of charge. This is not a school-sanctioned event, and families are responsible for transportation. You can RSVP here: https://bit.ly/OuterCapeDance26
  • Eddy Elementary School Fifth Grade Social, Thursday, June 18 (early evening time TBD). Eddy students are invited to our Eddy cafeteria and gym for a class social with dancing, gym time, food, and beverages. We will be asking for parent/caregiver chaperones as we get closer to the date.
  • Fifth Grade Moving Up Ceremony, Wednesday, June 24 @ 9am. Fifth grade students will be celebrated here at Eddy for completing elementary school as we wish them well on their next chapter in middle school!
A night under the stars for the Cape's fifth graders

Eddy Garden and Farm To School With Cape Cod Master Gardeners

A huge thank you to our Eddy custodians Kyle Anderson and Ashley Dennis-Lopes, Nurse Melissa Miller, Cafeteria staff Patti Taylor and Michelle Aucoin, teacher Nick Lilja, volunteer Cape Cod Master Gardeners, Nauset Director of Health and Wellness MaryEllen Reed, and the Nauset Farm to School Coordinator (position currently open and search in progress) for doing a tremendous job developing our front native pollinator garden, growing vegetables in our hydroponic units and cooking our meals with the produce, and developing an outdoor vegetable garden behind the school.

Thanks to identified farm-to-school grants, we have a new vegetable garden in the back of the school, which all students have utilized once so far, during the planting cycle, with the guidance of Cape Cod Master Gardeners. From now through the end of the school year, we will cycle all classes again through the vegetable garden, as Master Gardeners teach students about local bugs, soil, and nutrients, and depending on the weather, possibly a harvest season when Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Aucoin can incorporate these vegetables that students helped grow right here at Eddy! We will be looking for volunteers over the summer for periodic watering and weeding (more to come on this as we get into June if you are interested in helping with this). Thank you to our classroom teachers for their support and flexibility in carving out time from the school day for this.

Nurse Miller continues to work almost daily with all students in the school to plant, maintain, feed, and harvest our hydroponic units. We grow romaine lettuce, boy choy, spinach, cucumbers, and basil. Nurse Miller works with students on nutrition, as well as water purity, pH, and plant health.

Mr. Lilja, Custodian Anderson, and Custodian Dennis-Lopes has worked with Master Gardeners to support our students at the Tuesday Garden Club. Students have learned about native species and pollinators, and have gotten their hands dirty cleaning up the space, beautifying the space, and showing pride in Eddy Elementary School!
