Westchester Weekly

One Week Remaining To Take Pre-K Access Survey
News from the Principal
Greetings WE families,
After a nice, long weekend, the kids did great coming back and jumping back into the routines for a great week.
Monday, September 14, is the first Board of Education Community Meeting. These are opportunities for members of the CSD Community to engage in conversation with the school board members. Plan to join if possible. Unfortunately, these meetings are not accessible virtually. The meeting is from 6:30-8:00 at Beacon Hill Middle School.
If you haven’t already completed the Pre-K survey, please take a moment to share your thoughts. You do not have to have a pre-k age student to fill this survey out. The entire community is welcome to offer feedback. Our district leaders and the Pre-K Work group appreciate your input. For those of you who know me, I like to remind everyone about surveys until the deadline.
Dine-Outs are starting back up. Thank you, Ms. Nation, for setting these up for us. This month, Community Q will be the Dine-Out location. Enjoy a family meal, and a Community Q will make a donation to our school.
Don't forget to mark your calendars for these upcoming Westchester events:
September 18th: Community Circle - ALL invited
September 21st-25th: FALL BREAK
September 30th: Westchester Dine-out @ Community Q
From your very grateful principal,
Christine Knox
🔆SPOTLIGHT🔆
Handbook Update: DRESS CODE (see Code of Conduct for CSD Guiding Principles)
Children are free to express their personalities and style through their clothing, but we do have some guidelines.
Because students have recess or PE every day, we recommend that they wear tennis shoes, not Crocs or flip-flops. The right shoes help prevent falls and scrapes on the playground and in the hallways.
During colder weather, make sure your child has a hat, gloves and an extra layer to stay warm during PE and recess.
Students and staff are encouraged to wear Westchester spirit wear on Fridays.
Please label all clothing - we give away many items of clothing each year from the lost and found.
Please put an extra set of clothing in your student's backpack. Accidents and falls happen to ALL students, not just the little ones.

Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete the Recommendation for Review Form before Wednesday, September 30. No additional information is needed. The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Westchester Elementary is Jennifer Querubin. For more detailed information about the review process, please contact the Gifted & Talented Specialist for your school at jquerubin@csdecatur.net

Honoring the Threads That Weave Our Community 🧵
We believe that true community built on connection means moving beyond broad labels. Every family brings a unique story, set of traditions, and rich cultural identity to our shared table—and we want to celebrate those distinct roots together.
Help us learn more about your family’s cultural identity! Please take a few moments to fill out WE Celebrate Our Heritage to share your background, traditions, and story with us.
Your responses will help us build a more vibrant, authentic community where every specific heritage is recognized and valued.

Reminders
School Lunch Policy: Please be sure to maintain a positive lunch balance for your child. This will help us avoid any unexpected lunch changes for students. Check your Parent Portal frequently to make sure your child has adequate funds for the cafeteria. You may also find the Parent Portal app (for Apple or Android) to be more convenient.
YMCA School Break Camp provides a safe, engaging, and active environment where children can spend their break participating in:
• Team-building games and activities
• Arts and crafts
• STEAM and enrichment opportunities
• Physical activity and recreation
• Character-building experiences led by caring YMCA staff
We understand that school breaks can create childcare challenges for working families, and our goal is to provide a fun, affordable solution that keeps children active, learning, and connected.
