Scary Reads for the Spooky Season
How to Sell a Haunted House
by Grady Hendrix
A Bram Stoker and Goodreads award nominee, How To Sell a Haunted House is a gripping novel that delves into how your past—and your family—can haunt you more deeply than anything else. Set mostly in Charleston, SC, the tale follows single mom Louise from her current California home to her childhood home in Charleston upon the tragic death of her parents in a car accident. Awaiting her there is her estranged brother, with whom she has always had an intense sibling rivalry, and her parents' house, filled to the ceiling with remnants of her dad's academic career and her mom's collection of homemade folk art and (creepy!) dolls and puppets. She and her brother are forced to work together to get the house ready to sell, except there is something very wrong with the house that a fresh coat of paint won't fix. This tense, profound story manages to be both dark and campy at the same time. Hendrix masterfully shifts the mood from tense and frustrating to unsettling and somber, then to lighthearted and fun—keeping readers engaged and on their toes from start to finish.
Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Described as "Lovecraft meets the Brontës in Latin America," Mexican Gothic, both a Bram Stoker award nominee and a Locus award winner, centers on a young woman investigating her cousin's claims that her husband is trying to murder her. The story explores themes of racial, class, and labor inequality - showing how these injustices take root, seep into the environment, and corrupt generations. Building from a slow burn to deep, unsettling dread, Mexican Gothic will leave readers wary even after the last page.
The Only One Left
by Riley Sager
At seventeen, Lenora Hope, Hung her sister with a rope, Stabbed her father with a knife, Took her mother’s happy life, “It wasn’t me,” Lenora said, But she’s the only one not dead.
Once a shocking crime that rocked the Maine coast in 1929, the Hope family murders have since faded into a mere schoolyard chant. Though many believe 17-year-old Lenora was the culprit, the police never found enough evidence to charge her. Aside from denying involvement shortly after the killings, she has remained silent ever since—and has never left Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the tragedy unfolded. Fast forward to 1983, when Kit McDeere, a disgraced home caregiver, is given one final chance to redeem herself—by taking on the job of caring for the elderly and ailing Lenora. As Kit assists Lenora in recounting the events leading up to the Hope family massacre, it soon becomes clear that the story is far more complex than anyone realizes. When unsettling details emerge about the sudden departure of Kit’s predecessor, she begins to suspect that Lenora isn’t being entirely honest—and that the frail, quiet woman she’s caring for may be far more dangerous than she appears.
