Haynes Monthly
February - Part 1
Dear Haynes Families,
The Haynes Community and Celebrations Committee has been working on organizing a Community Week for our students. Since this is a new experience for Haynes students and staff, I want to share what this is going to look like.
Each classroom is going to be paired up with a "buddy" classroom so that an older grade will work with a younger grade. Teachers will work together to create pairs or small groups of students to work collaboratively together for the whole week. The theme for this year is Winter with a focus on Snowflakes so activities will all be centered around that theme. Each day, buddy classes will meet for about 45 minutes to do the activities. There will be connections to literacy, math, engineering with fine-motor skills, poetry, and more.
On Valentine's Day, students will be working with their buddies to design snowflakes that share the importance of showing kindness to others and how to make people feel loved and supported. We will then hang the snowflakes together to highlight how all the individuals make up Haynes School! We will also have a Tape Art Muralist come and help students create Winter murals out of tape, thank you HOP for coordinating that!
There is a lot of thought, preparation, and planning that goes into an event like this. The committee is working with all of the grade-level teachers, specialist teachers, special educators, tutors, etc. in order to ensure that activities are accessible, materials are prepped, and staff is ready to lead the activities. I'd like to thank the committee of Erin Kehew, Kristyn Traversi, Ally Dillaway, Stef Burrell, Lena Karotkin, Anna Noel, Heather Hufnagel, Stacey Lavigne, Colleen Kenosian, as well as all Haynes staff as everyone is helping out!
I look forward to sharing this new experience with you after the February Break.
Best,
Bryant Amitrano
Haynes Community Week: February 12-16
A message from the Committee
The Haynes Community Week is almost here! During the week of February 12th-16th, Haynes school will participate in a week of winter-themed fun! All students will be partnered with one or two students from another grade to engage in various activities that tie to the curriculum. Activities include read-alouds, art projects, winter poetry writing, math projects, and more fun surprises. The goal is for the students to build relationships with friends across grade levels while learning about kindness, belonging, and how much like a snowflake, Haynes students are unique and beautiful in their own special way.
Science & Curriculum Enrichment
Over the past several weeks there have been several fun and engaging science/curriculum enrichment that our students participated in. Our first, second, and third grades all had a visit from the Museum of Science. First grade had presentations on Light and Lasers, second grade on phases of matter, and third grade on magnetism. Our kindergartners and first graders also saw a puppet show this week with connections to their folklore and traditional literature units. Thank you to all of you for contributing to these events that HOP helps to organize for our students!
OT/PT Update
Movement or sensory paths create organized movement breaks for individual students or small teacher-led groups. It can help kids use their bodies appropriately to calm themselves, improve attention, and decrease anxiety. Also, it can help develop coordination, spatial awareness, and balance (which are all important components for learning too). Our OT/PT teachers, Anna Noel and Susan Venturoso designed and laid down these paths for Haynes this past week. We will share expectations with students at our School Meeting next week.
Nurse Jackman Update
The Illness Gray Zone
Sometimes it is easy to know that your child needs to stay home from school (fever or vomiting). Sometimes, however, it is hard to make that decision. This illness “gray zone” is unique to each child and each illness. If you find yourself unsure, ask the following:
Do they have enough energy to participate in the entire school day, including outdoor recess and P.E.?
Are their secretions manageable? Are boogers getting everywhere or making it hard to talk/breathe comfortably?
Is their cough controlled enough to not distract them and the classroom?
Did they need cold medication to feel well enough to get out of bed? Students relying on cold medication often come to the nurse feeling horrible around 11:30 am when the medication has worn off.
Taking care of sick children is not easy. Making the decision about whether to keep them home when they’re in the illness Gray Zone is not easy. Nurse Jackman understands and doesn’t judge, she’s just here to help.
