Sam Jenkins, 18, is Oak Glen High School’s Lion Scholar for May. Sam is the son of Geoffrey and Rachelle Jenkins. He resides in New Cumberland, West Virginia.

During Sam’s four years at Oak Glen, he maintained a 3.9 GPA and earned the West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship for his Distinguished score on the SAT. He has been a member of the National Honors Society for two years and the National Technical Honor Society for one year.

Sam studied carpentry at the JDR Career Center, where he successfully earned his OSHA 10 certification. He and Lucas Zoellers competed in the 2025 SkillsUSA competition, where they won first place in the Entry-Level Carpentry division.

Sam served on prom committee for two years and participated in the school plays Dracula and Charlotte’s Web during his freshman year. He also built the production sets that year and continued to help when needed.

Sam has been a dedicated teammate across multiple sports. He is a one-year letterman in soccer, a three-year letterman in baseball, and a four-year letterman in swim. In baseball, Sam was a part of the 2023 Sectional Champions and finished off his senior season by hitting his first out-of-the-park home run. On the swim team, Sam holds three school records in the 200-medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and the 400-freestyle relay alongside teammates Maddox McKay, Shawn Ware, and Lyndon Graf. At the 2026 State Tournament, he and his relay teams capped off a historic run taking home second place in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, and third in the 200- freestyle relay.

Outside of school, Sam is actively involved at Weirton First Church of the Nazarene, where he sings on the praise team, assists with kindergarten church, and volunteers for Vacation Bible School. During his summer months, he is employed as a lifeguard at Tomlinson Run State Park.

Following graduation, Sam plans to attend West Virginia University, where he will major in physical therapy.

Note for recognition: The Lions Club Program is sponsored by District 29L Region 1, zone 1, Lions Clubs in Chester & New Cumberland and Newell, WV

"Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else, I've felt that many times. My hope for all of us is that "the miles we go before we sleep" will be filled with all the feelings that come form deep caring-delight, sadness, joy, wisdom-and that in all the endings of our life, we will be able to see the new beginnings."
