Students Finding Their Way

College Visits

In November, WHS sent 40 students to visit SUNY Oneonta University and Hartwick College. Students were able to see college life first hand! In the Spring, we will send another 40 students to Albany where they will visit Hudson Valley Community College and another school to be determined. Between the two visits, students will have had the chance to see traditional Liberal Arts programs, Technical/Manufacturing programs, and Science programs.

Career Education and Employment Opportunities

In October, Webutuck High School hosted a Career Fair for our students, and in the spring we will hold a Job Fair where local businesses and employers come to WHS and interview students for part-time and summer work opportunities.

Work Based Learning

WHS continues to increase the number of students who are receiving course credit for work placements and part-time jobs outside of school. In 2022-23 we had 6 students take advantage of this opportunity. In 2023-24 we have 18 students receiving course credit for work placements and part-time jobs!

Manufacturing Boot Camp

On December 5th, the Dutchess BOCES superintendent Jason Schetelic, met with the WHS senior class. He spoke with the students about an exciting program called INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING

TECHNICIAN-IMT- BOOT CAMP. The objective of the IMT Boot camp is to upskill the youth workforce and drive local Dutchess County businesses forward.

The IMT Boot camp provides students with industry recognized certifications and training to enter the growing manufacturing industry. Highlights of this program include:

  • Students can earn a monetary stipend while training.
  • All instruction is specifically designed to be carried over directly to day-to-day work.
  • Nationally recognized credentials gained throughout the program
  • Structured visitations to local employers.
  • Blended learning approach to optimize time investment.

What Our Students are Thinking

Webutuck students and staff have been involved in organized plans to improve school climate and culture for the past two school years. Each school has a Climate and Culture team that is made up of staff, parents, and students. WHS has an additional building level student Climate and Culture team that meets regularly, and they recently submitted a proposal for a Mental Health and Wellness Day in April. The event would be organized by students for students. The following are quotes from some of the students, who explained their motivation for organizing this future event:

"We all need time to relax. We all have so much work, and we need time to collect ourselves. School can sometimes be overwhelming." Gissel Oros, 11th grade

"We are organizing it because all of us are under stress from school, and this would be time set aside for students to de-stress." Madeline Wesley, 11th grade

"There is a lot of pressure in the spring with reviewing for Regents exams and finals. Everyone needs to be forced to slow down and focus on themselves. We should take time for self care."

Violet Aufdenberg, 10th grade

"Having this day is a way to decompress. Having one day that is not the regular routine is important." Zaina Aboueid, 10th grade

"We've heard that some other schools do this. Between school, family pressures, and after school jobs, we need to take time for mental health." Angel Camargo Vazquez, 10th grade

"School can be stressful with academic pressures and personal challenges. It's very important for our mental health to slow down once and a while and not overwork ourselves." Gianna Kall, 10th grade

What's Happening in Our Classrooms?

From Our Language Department.....

The Webutuck High School Spanish classes have been working hard this month. We began November with culture lessons to celebrate the holiday of Dia de los Muertos. Several classes decorated calaveras (sugar skulls) and the DCC Spanish class had a fiesta with some typical Mexican food of the holiday.

In Spanish IV, students wrote and illustrated children’s books in Spanish. We then spent several class days sharing our stories with some elementary classes. The high school students taught the elementary classes a rhyme with location words in Spanish and then read their books in small groups.

Spanish III completed an art unit, and students learned vocabulary related to art as well as expressions to make comparisons of different artwork. We spent time learning about the life and art of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, as well as Spanish artists Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Students participated in gallery walks to view and discuss the different paintings of each artist and their various styles. The unit ended with a project/presentation on an artist of their choice and a comparison of two works of art, all in Spanish!

In the Spanish Cinema elective, students have been enjoying learning about important aspects of cinematography in Spanish speaking films. We have watched various films; live action and animated that demonstrate Magic Realism. Magic Realism is a very important literary genre in the Spanish speaking world. From the movies watched, in groups, students created presentations of the films and chose scenes that showed aspects of Magic Realism. Students presented their presentations to the class. Right now we are watching social justice films based on true events that have affected the lives of Hispanic/Latino Americans.

Being Grateful For What We Have....

Each day I leave my home in Red Hook around 6:00 am, and I travel east on route 199. My coffee cup is warm, and the rising sun makes the horizon over the Connecticut border glow. During that time, I'm able to reflect on the previous school day and think about what the new day will bring. Even on my most difficult days, I remind myself how fortunate I am to work at a place where I am able to interact with each of our 208 students. More often than not, I find time to have meaningful conversations with students, staff members, and parents and caregivers. These are the opportunities that life in a small high school provides.

For a small school, we offer an impressive number of advanced courses and interesting elective classes. We have sports, clubs, and variety of other after school activities. But as often as I can, I remind our students how fortunate they are to go to a small high school where they aren't just numbers, and there are adults and peers they can connect with and who care about them.

Have a wonderful holiday season!
