These last two weeks we have had a visitor from Bishop High School helping us in our class. Lindsay is a senior and former OLMCS student with hopes of maybe becoming a teacher one day. She decided to use her J-term back at Mount Carmel working with our class. She has loved working with this group, and the feeling is mutual! Thank you to Lindsay, for all her help!

This week, Progress Reports are in the Friday Folder. These are a good opportunity to check in and revisit any goals set for the trimester, which ends March 6. Please make sure to sign these and return them in the Friday Folder. There are also some Free Dress passes in Friday Folders for those with Perfect Attendance so far. Way to go, and keep it up!

We continue to make progress with our State Report, finishing up "Famous People" this week. This chapter was a little rough, overall, and can use some good polishing. We spent our class time on Thursday making these even better! In Math, we took our test on Adding and Subtracting Fractions, which also means, we finished our first math book. The class got a lot of joy in recycling their math books, and receiving brand new ones, which will take us to the end of the year. Today, we began a new unit, Multiplying and Dividing Fractions, which heavily uses math facts. A bit of extra review this weekend could be a good idea! In Reading, we focused on biographies, and this week, we read about Rosa Parks, and her strength in standing up for what she believed was right. In SciTrek students designed and carried out an experiment to measure and observe pen smears. In Social Studies, we began our study of the American Revolution, and closely looked at some of the events that caused tension within the colonies. In Religion, we are starting to look at the parts of the mass, and will also put some focus on our annual Catholic Daughter's of America entries.

Next Up? Volleyball!

Congratulations to all our 5th graders who were able to play basketball this season! Next up is a 5th grade coed volleyball team. Games will be Mondays/Wednesdays, and the court is open to practice any other days. Games run from February 2 to March 18. A HUGE thank you to Holly Franke for stepping up to coach! Sports contracts were sent home today for those students who expressed interest.

Catholic School's Week (January 25-30)

Sunday

Our Catholic Schools Week kicks off with a family mass on Sunday at 10:00am. This is not mandatory, but a nice way to kick off a celebration for our amazing school. Coffee and treats will be available after mass, and classrooms will be open to view.

Monday

Our annual Grandparent's Tea is coming up on Monday, January 26. Postcards for this are in Friday Folders. Please use these to send to grandparents and encourage them to RSVP! Postcards go home with the oldest child.

Tuesday

We will head to Bishop High School for an "all Catholic schools mass" on Tuesday. Permission slips are in the Friday Folder. Please wear uniforms on this day. We will also eat snack there, so please plan on packing a "pocket snack" that they can carry in their pocket to eat there.

Wednesday

Each year, as part of Catholic School's Week, our students participate in a "Day of Service" where our students give back to our communities. This year, we have paired up with our 3rd grade penpals to hold a bake sale to raise funds for new altar server robes for the parish. On our service day, Wednesday, January 28, we will be meeting with our penpals to make posters to advertise our bake sale, which will take place on Thursday, January 29. Please see this doc to sign up to bring any goodies.

Thursday

Our "Day of Play" is back! Students are welcome to wear free dress on Thursday, and bring in games from home to play. We will be having a fun day of play!

Friday

We had our Move-A-Thon kickoff today, and our class animal is the LION! Any yellow, orange, or brown color clothing with any lion accessories would be great for the day! Thank you to Savvy for being our Limbo expert up on stage! Look for more information in the Friday Folder. You will also get an email about the fundraiser from the school.
