October 2023
Leeton Elementary
October marks the start of our reading incentive programs for our elementary students. The goal of these programs is to encourage our students to read :)
Each month, a Bingo card will be sent home with your student. There are 12 different reading activities to be completed. When a student completes a Bingo board, they can turn it in to their teacher for a prize. Students are allowed to complete as many boards as they would like each month.
Again, our goal is to encourage our students to read and then read some more! Please note, we recognize that younger students are still learning to read and the minutes they log reading may be from an adult reading to them. This is absolutely fine! The more they practice reading and/or are exposed to reading, the better their reading skills will be! I have included the Bingo boards for October below. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions. Happy Reading!

Title I Parent Information
Leeton Elementary receives federal funds to provide Title I reading services to our students in K-5th grades. We are what's considered to be a schoolwide program, which means, all students can participate in Title reading services as needed, without having to meet certain qualification requirements.
How are students identified for needing Title reading services?
We utilize our beginning of the year iReady data as well as information from classroom teacher assessments and observations to determine which students would benefit from Title I reading services. At this point, parents are contacted to discuss a student's achievement and to gain permission for students to participate.
Are there requirements the school must complete in order to stay in compliance?
Yes. There are a number of requirements our school must do in order to stay in compliance with federal and state guidelines in regards to Title I. Some of these requirements include have parent meetings twice a year. Our first Title I parent meeting will be held on October 4th @ 6 p.m. All parents are invited to attend! At this meeting we will share additional information about Title I reading as well as share a number of documents for informational purposes including our school-parent-student compact and our parent involvement policy. These documents are also included below.
Safety Awareness in October
The month of October holds several opportunities for our students to learn about and practice safety practices at school. October is National Bus & Fire Safety month. We have partnered with Johnson County Emergency Management as well as the Leeton Volunteer Fire Department & First Student to host a one day event in which our students will learn about fire and bus safety. Students will ride the bus to the Leeton Volunteer fire station (located off EE Hwy just outside of city limits) to learn about fire safety in their homes & school. Additionally, they will learn about bus safety expectations and practice emergency bus evacuations. If you do not wish for your child to leave school grounds, please contact the elementary office by October 11th so alternative arrangements can be made.
Additionally, during the month of October, students will participate in the statewide Earthquake drill. We will hold our drill on October 19th since we are not in school on the 20th.
Finally, we will wrap up our safety awareness month, with our "I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared" intruder awareness week. This is a book that is written by the individuals who train in the A.L.I.C.E. intruder response method. Please read the attached letter for additional information regarding A.L.I.C.E. and the option for your child to opt out of these lessons and activities.
If you have any questions regarding any of our safety awareness drills during the month, please contact the elementary office.

Menus
Student meal prices:
Breakfast: $1.50
Lunch: $2.70
Reduced Breakfast: $0.40
Reduced Lunch: $0.40
There are two ways you can put money on your child's lunch account:
1. Submit payment to the elementary office. If you are sending the money with your child, please make sure to place the money in an envelope and that it is clearly marked whose account it goes to;
2. Pay online via the parent portal. Please note, there is a small service fee associated with this type of transaction.
Your child is allowed to charge up to $5.00. After this point, they will be given their meal each day, but no seconds will be allowed. Please also note that seconds are not offered to K-1st grade students. However, there is a fruit and vegetable bar available every day and students are allowed to have as much of these items as they would like as long as they are not being wasteful.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a process in which our school staff has worked together to identify behavioral expectations (see Matrix below), teach these expectations consistently to our students, and provide positive specific feedback to reinforce expected behavior. Make sure to check out the picture below.
What PBIS is not...
PBIS focuses on teaching expected behaviors and providing positive feedback to students when they follow those expectations, but at Leeton we focus on providing feedback in ways that encourage intrinsic motivation (through verbal feedback and student shout-outs that are included in our morning announcements) rather than trinkets and tangible tokens. PBIS is also not a replacement for consequences when a student does not follow our expectations. Depending on the level of the offense, students will given consequences that are outlined in our parent handbook (pages 29-32).
