Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - October 27, 2025
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
October’s stretch of mild days is giving way to the crisp chill that reminds us fall is truly here. A round of rain is expected to pass through Thursday night into Friday morning, setting the stage for a chilly but dry Halloween—perfect weather for Newtown’s beloved Main Street tradition. With literally thousands of costumed children making their way from house to house, our Main Street residents devote both time and resources to make the evening special. As one resident recently told me, “You just don’t live on Main Street unless you love Halloween!” Families can continue to support the event by donating candy at Newtown Parks and Rec or Trinity Episcopal Church, where collection boxes are available. Extra candy can also be shared directly with households greeting trick-or-treaters along the route. Most importantly, please use extra caution when driving on the evening of October 31. With so many excited children out and about, even a moment’s distraction can make a difference—especially for our newer drivers.
At the October 24 Board of Education meeting, our elementary and Reed principals presented their school-based strategic goals for the 2025–2026 school year. As I shared earlier, each school’s goals are directly aligned with the district’s 3-Year Strategic Goals (2025–2028), a framework that anchors our collective efforts in facilities, security, technology, human resources, business and finance, and curriculum and instruction.
While setting goals in each of these areas is essential to sustaining Newtown’s reputation as both a high-performing and highly desirable school district, our school-based goals keep us centered on what matters most - supporting student growth and achievement, even amid the many day-to-day demands that can easily divert our attention.
For those interested in learning more, you can view each school’s goals below:

Middle Gate Strategic Goals 2025-2026
Sandy Hook Strategic Goals 2025-2026
Reed Intermediate Strategic Goals 2025-2026
At our next Board meeting, Newtown Middle School, Newtown High School, and our Director of Teaching and Learning will present their goals, followed by our Pupil Services goals, on November 18th, completing this year’s overview of how each school is working to bring our district vision to life.
Next week when you open this email, we will have set our clocks back one hour. As I am not a fan of darkness at 4:30 pm, I will start my countdown to that day in early February when the sun will set after 5 pm!
Warm regards,
Anne

Reed's Color Games
Reed's annual Color games event was a success! Color games is a week-long event that encourages students to take part in class tasks and activities and earn points for their hands-on work and written responses. The goal for each homeroom is to ensure that all classmates participate, work together in positive ways, build team spirit, and demonstrate good sportsmanship. One house per grade level wins the event and the winning house is provided with an extra recess and popsicles. PTA supplied classroom teachers with all of the materials that were needed for these “minute-to-win-it” activities.
At the end of the week, each grade level participated in their finale event, with fifth grade students attending on Thursday and sixth grade students on Friday. House points are totaled and the house with the most number of points is declared the winner. This year, our Green House won the event with a total of 19,284 points, whereas Blue House earned 17,991. All students did an amazing job and we would like to extend our gratitude to the Reed PTA for hosting an amazing event!

Managing Negative Lunch Balances
In order to help families avoid the accumulation of large negative lunch balances, the district will be implementing the following steps:
-
At $25 or more: Parents/guardians will be notified by email.
-
At $50 or more: School personnel will contact you directly.
-
At $75 or more: A formal letter will be mailed home from the school.
-
If balances continue to grow without an effort to reconcile: Families will be contacted by the Central Office.
Please note: Students with a negative balance are not permitted to purchase a second lunch or snacks until the account is brought current.
Our goal is to support families in staying up to date with lunch accounts and to prevent larger debts from accumulating. By connecting families with school personnel, we hope to assist you in making online payments or, if eligible, applying for free and reduced-price lunch.
Click on the link for instructions on how to set up a MY SCHOOL BUCKS account so you can keep your account current.
Get Involved, Be Connected, Have a Voice - Join a Newtown PTA!
Our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) is a group made up of parents, teachers, and sometimes community members who work together to support our schools. The primary goal of our PTAs is to build a strong connection between families and schools to create a positive learning environment for students. PTAs often organize activities and events that benefit students, such as fundraisers, family nights, and volunteer programs. These events help raise money for classroom supplies, field trips, or other school needs that may not be covered by the school budget.
In addition to fundraising, the PTA acts as a bridge between parents and school administrations. They advocate for students by addressing concerns or providing feedback to school leaders. PTAs also host meetings, or informational sessions to keep parents informed about important issues, such as curriculum changes, testing schedules, or educational policies. By fostering collaboration among parents, teachers, and administrators, our PTAs plays a crucial role in enriching the school community and supporting student success.
You can find a link to each school's PTA by clicking on this link.
