Sept. 28 River Clean-Up Event
We have a unique opportunity to observe the Hurricane Helene anniversary by participating in a special river clean-up and spiritual observance on Sunday, Sept. 28 near Asheville. This event is being sponsored jointly by Mountain True and the Jewish disaster relief non-profit NECHAMA. The two organizations have invited the UUFH community to participate in a "Reverse Tashlich" inspired by the Jewish tradition.
During Tashlich on Rosh HaShanah (Jewish New Year), followers symbolically cast “sins” into water. In Reverse Tashlich, that ritual is turned into action by removing human “sin” from the water – cleaning up local waterways and starting the year with purpose and care.
Please contact Rev. George if you are interested in learning more about this unique spiritual and environmental experience. You can also visit the Mountain True web page here.
For those who do not participate in the Reverse Tashlich, we will have a Helene anniversary service at UUFH at 10:30.
Event Information
Join Jewish disaster relief organization, NECHAMA, and MountainTrue for a river clean-up and celebration of Reverse Tashlich. Reverse Tashlich, an initiative by Repair the Sea, invites communities to take hands-on, meaningful action during the High Holidays by cleaning up our waterways. Clean-up will focus on Hurricane Helene Debris and will be land-based.
Participants can expect to learn about NECHAMA and take part in a short ritual to honor Reverse Tashlich during the clean-up.
