November
2026-2027 School Year
Hello everyone,
It does not feel like the first week of November with this amazing weather we are having! I hope everyone has been enjoying the latest warm stretch. As we head into November, it’s a great time to pause and reflect, especially with Thanksgiving upon us. So much goes into each school day to make it a success and I am appreciative of our staff, students, parents and guardians for all they do in their roles to make Gananda PROUD. Also, with Veterans Day next week, I wanted to extend a big thank you to those of you that have served our nation, and I hope that next Wednesday brings all the appreciation that is very much deserved.
Please check out the rest of the newsletter for highlights from last month and important information for what’s coming up, including the end of Marking Period One.
Respectfully,
Dr. Christopher J. Whipple, Principal

PLTW Biomedical Science Field Trip
Gananda biomedical students visited the Rochester Regional College of Health Science on Friday 10/30. They participated in simulations in various nursing careers. The college provides degrees in Practical Nursing, Nursing Associate of Applied Science, Surgical Tech and Radiological Tech. All programs are FREE if the student works for the Rochester regional system for three years. What an amazing opportunity!

Peter/Wendy Cast and Crew - October 2026
Bravo to the cast and crew of Peter/Wendy! The performances and set design were fantastic and it was an interesting take on the classic story. Looking forward to "Little Shop of Horrors" in the Spring!
October Students of the Month
Claire for 9th Grade:
The ninth grade team names Claire as student of the month. Claire shows great drive in her class. She is always positive with her peers and teachers. In addition, she is a joy to have in class. Congrats to Claire!
Jack for 10th Grade:
The tenth grade team selects Jack as student of the month. Jack demonstrates outstanding effort in the classroom. He shows exceptional leadership with his work ethic. Because Jack excels both academically and behaviorally, he serves as a positive role model for his peers.
Jenna for 11th Grade:
The eleventh grade team chooses Jenna for student of the month. Jenna is driven and outstanding in class. She is a leader in class, not following her peers but doing what she knows she needs to do to be successful. She is impressing all of her teachers with her work ethic and work completion, both in and out of class. Congratulations Jenna!
Jazmin for 12th Grade:The twelfth grade team is pleased to honor Jazmin as our October Student of the Month. She consistently shows how driven she is by completing assignments in a timely manner while also showing willingness to improve her assignments for the best possible outcome. Jazmin is also outstanding as far as her attitude toward learning in class. Beyond her genuine friendliness and kindness toward classmates and adults, Jazmin is respectful toward everyone she encounters. Her presence in Gananda is truly positive, and this makes her more than deserving of student of the month. Congratulations!
Jr. Area All-State
Congratulations to Addison Edlund for being selected to participate in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone 2 Jr. Area All-State Festival! In order to be selected for the honors ensembles, students need to perform at a Spring NYSSMA solo festival. At the solo festival the students perform scales, a prepared piece, and a sight-reading excerpt. Our students’ scores were then compared with students, on like instruments, located throughout our zone. We are in Zone 2 which contains the following eight counties: Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca and Wayne. There were hundreds of applicants for each ensemble. The highest scoring students were selected for the Area All-State ensembles.
Addison was chosen for trumpet. This is her second time being selected and she ranked 8th overall!
The Jr. Area All-State festival will take place at Lyndonville High School the weekend of November 6th and 7th. Congratulations to Addison on earning a spot in this prestigious ensemble!
First Marking Period Ends 11/13
A new academic ineligibility list will be generated based on any failing grades from Marking Period 1. Please see pg. 6 of the Extracurricular Handbook for more info and how to regain eligibility.

College Application Material Processing & Processing Delays
As our seniors submit their college applications over the coming months, please keep in mind that colleges receive tens of thousands of application materials during peak deadlines. Because of this high volume, there is often a processing lag of up to two weeks between when materials are sent and when a college's admissions office updates its system.
If a college sends an email stating it is missing transcripts or recommendation letters, please do not panic—it likely already has these items in its system queue.
What students should do:
- Check Your Portals First:
- Students can log into their application portals (e.g., Common App, Naviance, or SCOIR) to confirm that school counselors and teachers have successfully submitted their required materials.
- Observe the two-week rule:
- If materials were sent less than two weeks ago and students do not have an immediate, pending deadline, please wait out the full two-week processing window before reaching out.
- Nervous About an Upcoming Deadline?
- If students have an urgent deadline approaching and are concerned about missing documents, they are invited to check in with their school counselor.
Thank you for your patience and support as our counseling department works alongside Gananda's seniors!
Next Step in the Journey: Complete Your FAFSA!
Now that college applications are underway, the next critical step for senior families is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is required to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional grants, work-study programs, and loans.
Submit the FAFSA Online: Visit the official Federal Student Aid Website to create your FSA ID and start your application.
Get Live Financial Aid Help: The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) hosts regular virtual workshops and drop-in presentations to guide families step-by-step through the application process. View upcoming schedule dates, register for sessions, or access drop-in support directly at HESC FAFSA/TAP Completion Events
Kickstart Your Scholarship Search!
Finding additional funding for college is a crucial part of the planning process!
National Search Engines: For families interested in exploring nationwide opportunities, we recommend creating a free account on Fastweb. Fastweb matches students with customized national scholarship opportunities based on their profile, background, and interests.
Check Your Email Daily: While national databases are helpful, local and school-specific scholarships offer your best odds of winning. Our counseling office regularly emails targeted scholarship opportunities directly to student email accounts. Students: Please make a habit of checking your student email daily so you don't miss out on local awards you qualify for!
Important Reminder: Dual Enrollment Grades Count!
For students currently enrolled in Dual Enrollment college-level courses, please remember that these final grades become a part of your permanent college transcript.
GPA & Transfer Impact: Low grades in dual enrollment classes do not just stay on your high school record—they may directly impact your starting college GPA. Poor academic performance can affect course transferability and trigger real post-secondary consequences, including initial academic probation or financial aid penalties upon entering college.
Stay on Top of Assignments: Success requires consistent effort! Both students and parents should check Schoology regularly to track current grades, monitor upcoming assignments, and address any missing work before it affects the final grade.
From the Nurse - Reporting Absences
- If your call is not answered, please leave a detailed message of:
- your name
- your student’s name
- time needed to be dismissed
- reason for early dismissal.
- Please allow up to one hour for these requests to be processed
- Can also use ParentSquare or email lhall@gananda.org to report same day early dismissals.
Cell Phone and Personal Electronics Policy
We will follow the same policy as last school year, see p. 31 in the Student Handbook. There is a bell-to-bell restriction on personal internet-enabled devices from 7:35AM - 2:27PM. Use of cell phones and personal internet-enabled devices is not permitted during that time. Personal devices should be stored in assigned student lockers. We will follow the same tiered responses for students in possession of a personal device during the school day, see p. 31.
Parents/guardians may communicate directly with their student via their student's school email, which is the last two digits of their graduation year, first initial, last name @student.gananda.org (ex: 30jallen@student.gananda.org). The main office phone is also available if students need to talk directly with their parents/guardians.
Parking Lot - Arrival/Dismissal Procedures
For student drop off, please use the Wiedrick Road entrance and follow the flow of traffic (see yellow arrows on diagram).
Please make sure to use the designated crosswalks when approaching the building. Avoid walking across the parking lot aisles. This helps improve safety and visibility during the busy times at drop off and pickup.
For dismissal, the 2nd row in the parking lot is reserved for cars that are picking up students (see green oval on diagram). Please park and wait in one of the 2nd row spots when picking up your student at dismissal.
Please do NOT use the front bus loop*. This loop is designated for our bus use only. This is for your student's safety.
We greatly appreciate everyone following these procedures as they are meant to help make the parking lot safer.
*Use of the bus loop can occur with approval from our school nurse

Please note that school is NOT in session on November 11 (Veterans Day) and November 25-27 (Thanksgiving Break).
From the Nurse - Physical and Vaccine Requirements
Students entering twelfth grade need to have their meningococcal vaccine or a scheduled appointment with their physician by September 21 to prevent exclusion from school.
9th and 11th graders need a NYS mandated physical.
Medications (over the counter or prescription) cannot be given out without a note from the doctor. Please use the OTC Medication Form or Permission to Administer Medication Form found on our website.
Any student registering for sports needs to have a physical dated within one year from the start of practices to participate. Outdated, unsigned or missing forms will prevent your student from trying out.
All medical forms can be found under the Health Services & Information part of the HS website, or you can click the button at the bottom of this section.
If you have any questions, please email the school nurse at lhall@gananda.org.
