Community in Action: A Special Chapel Guest Message
Community is built when we notice one another, make room for others, and show up when someone needs us. That message was especially meaningful this week as St. Luke’s parent Col. Becca Sinclair joined us for chapel to share lessons from her more than 20 years of service in the U.S. Army.
As the mother of Jackson, Col. Sinclair is part of our own Hilltop community, making her message a natural connection to our October value of the month: Community. She reminded students that even the strongest teams depend on people who support, encourage, and care for one another. Whether in the Army, a classroom, or on the playground, we each have a role to play in making those around us feel seen and included.
Her challenge to our students was simple: Notice people. Include people. Show up for people. It’s a reminder that building community doesn’t require a title or a uniform, just a willingness to recognize that others matter.
At St. Luke’s, community is at the heart of who we are. Our strength comes from the many people who make up the Hilltop family, from our students, faculty, and staff to our parents, grandparents, and alumni. Each plays an important role in creating a place where people feel connected, supported, and valued. We’re grateful to Col. Sinclair for sharing her perspective and reminding us that a strong community is built through the everyday ways we show up for one another.

Week 9: Parenting for the Future
This semester, Rachel Sanborn’s Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Snapshot will feature weekly, parent-friendly takeaways from Jessica Lahey’s book The Gift of Failure. Mrs. Sanborn, along with Student Achievement Coordinator, Donna Finch will wrap up the series with a book talk at the December 1st Parent Council Coffee.
Sometimes the best parenting choice doesn't feel like the best choice in the moment. Letting your child experience a forgotten assignment, an imperfect project, or a disappointing outcome can be uncomfortable for everyone. But Lahey asks us to think beyond today: Are we raising a child who needs us to solve problems, or a young person who knows how to solve problems? When we focus on long-term independence rather than short-term comfort, we give our children skills that will serve them well beyond childhood.
