Hello ELC families,

This spring season has provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage in a variety of thoughtfully planned, developmentally appropriate activities that celebrate the themes of growth, renewal, and exploration. Through hands-on learning experiences, our preschoolers studied the life cycle of butterflies, observing the transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis and, eventually, to butterfly. These lessons not only supported early science literacy but also encouraged curiosity, observation, and a sense of wonder about the natural world.

In addition to our classroom explorations, students participated in a special springtime egg hunt. This event featured beeping eggs, ensuring accessibility for all children and reinforcing our commitment to creating inclusive experiences where every child feels valued and able to fully participate. The joy and excitement on the children’s faces were truly heartwarming and reflective of the strong sense of community we strive to foster every day.

We extend our deepest appreciation to the families, caregivers, and volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to support these events. Your involvement plays a vital role in enriching our program and helping us create meaningful, memorable experiences for our students. We are grateful for your continued partnership and look forward to sharing many more moments of growth and celebration together.

We are excited to share that our Countdown to Kindergarten event is just around the corner! This important milestone helps ease the transition from preschool to elementary school by providing families with helpful resources, information, and opportunities to connect with kindergarten staff and learn more about what to expect in the year ahead. It’s a valuable experience for both children and their caregivers, offering a glimpse into the kindergarten environment while supporting school readiness and confidence.

Please stay tuned for additional details, including dates, times, and how to participate. We encourage all families with children entering kindergarten this fall to attend, as it’s a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, meet key staff, and celebrate the next step in your child’s educational journey. We look forward to sharing this exciting time with you!

As always, thank you for sharing your children with us!

-Catherine

Zoology:

Most children grow up with pets or familiar with different types of animals from an early age. It does not take much for children to recognize that some animals have certain characteristics and traits and compare and contrast them.

In Montessori, Children are expected to classify plants and animals because both are a living thing. Zoology is an exciting topic for children because they seem naturally drawn to animals and this helps incorporate their curiosity for lifelong interest. This also helps support the idea that everything in the universe is connected. Our job as a teacher is to support children with naming animals, parts of the animal, and elaborate factual descriptions about animals.

Pets in the classroom is an important part of a Montessori classroom due to the fact that the students are responsible to care for their own class pets. They will have the opportunity to feed, clean the tank, and watch and ensure all looks good with the animal. This helps support a deeper understanding of animals and taking care of them daily through scientific study.

Thank you everyone who came out and celebrated Spring Fling with us! We appreciate your support and involvement! Enjoy the long weekend and Happy Easter from the ELC team.

This week, our students have been actively engaged in a variety of hands-on activities designed to strengthen their fine motor skills and enhance their understanding of early science concepts. As part of our themed learning experience centered around "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," we introduced a tactile version of the beloved story to support sensory exploration and literacy development.

To build fine motor coordination, the children practiced stringing green beads, carefully counted grapes, and participated in a fun and creative sorting activity to construct their own grape caterpillars. These activities not only supported dexterity and hand-eye coordination but also encouraged early math skills such as counting and pattern recognition.

In addition, we have been exploring the fascinating life cycle of a caterpillar. The classroom has welcomed real baby caterpillars, allowing students to observe their growth and transformation firsthand. As the caterpillars progress through each stage of development, we supplement their learning with educational figurines that visually represent each phase—egg, larva, pupa, and butterfly—providing opportunities for exploration and discussion.

Once our caterpillars complete their metamorphosis into butterflies, we will celebrate their transformation by releasing them into nature, offering a memorable and meaningful conclusion to our life cycle study.
