Dear Highlander Community,
Happy New Year! I hope each of you feels renewed and recharged, ready to embrace the year ahead. As we embark on the journey ahead, our goal remains to grow as educators, and raise the bar of excellence for all our students.
A key highlight this month is the launch of a district-wide student council initiative. At the lower school, representatives have already been selected, and the school leadership team is eagerly planning a structure that actively involves student voices. At the secondary level,an application process will determine the student representatives. Fostering our students’ leadership skills is vital, and encouraging them to advocate for themselves helps ensure that student perspectives are central to Highlander’s mission. If you're interested in contributing to these efforts, please reach out. We welcome guest speakers to inspire and support our students.
This month also marks Peace Week, a cherished tradition at Highlander. We are continuing to strengthen our partnership with the Nonviolence Center. More of our students and staff are receiving training in Kingian Nonviolence as we align our efforts with our core mission of social justice. Stay tuned to learn more about our Peace week celebrations.
I would like to extend my congratulations to the winners of our first Holiday Art Competition. The winning artwork will be transformed into personalized cards and memorabilia for our community.
Thank you for being a vital part of our journey. Together, let’s embrace the possibilities that 2025 will bring!
Wishing you all a wonderful start to the year!
Warm Regards,

As we head into January, we will start to see the onset of colder weather. Unfortunately, with colder weather (and more time indoors with dry air) comes more coughs, colds, runny noses, and illnesses. Please keep children at home if they are sick and not feeling well.
If your child seems tired, pale, has little appetite, is not tolerating solid foods, and is generally "not themself,” PLEASE do not send them to school. If you send your child to school to "see how they feel in a little while,” you are potentially exposing other students, and our staff, to a contagious illness. This ripple effect exposes classmates and then their siblings and family members to the illness.
If your child has been ill with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or an infection requiring antibiotics (including pink eye/conjunctivitis) please remember :
~The 24 Hour Rule~
Students may return to school after:
- 24 hours without a temperature/fever (100.5 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) and without taking fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol/Acetaminophen or Advil/Motrin/Ibuprofen.
- 24 hours without nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (and able to eat a normal diet).
- 24 hours after first dose of antibiotic medication for treatment of illness/infection
If, after 24 hours, your child still does not feel well enough to return to school, please keep them home and contact the nurse or the office to report their continued absence.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy Holiday Break!
Nurse Julia
Thank you so much for your support during the Holiday Joy event! Together, we truly lift each other up.
As we welcome the new year, I want to wish you and your family a Happy and Healthy New Year. I’m excited about the fun events we have planned, and I’ll need everyone’s help to make them a success, stay tuned.
As we get back to school routines, please remember that Attendance Matters.
Attendance at this time of year can be challenging for students as it's often tempting for families to take extra time off for the holidays. This can put students into the chronically absent category if they have missed more than ten percent of the school year so far. Since we have been in school for 78 days as of 12/20, that means any student who has missed 7 or more days of school so far this year is now considered chronically absent.
Attendance matters, and we've seen the impact of chronic absenteeism district wide. If you are having trouble getting someone to school, you can reach out to our Family Engagement Coordinator for help.
With love,
Ms. Tatiana
