Sixth Graders Explore Savannah
GWA sixth graders enjoyed three days of hands-on learning, fun, and new adventures during their class trip to Savannah. They visited the Massie School, Georgia’s first public school, learned about the diverse architecture of America’s first planned city, and traveled to the First African Baptist Church to hear about its history and pioneering congregation.
On day two, students explored Georgia’s coast and the Savannah River to learn about the unique ecosystems and marine life. The dolphin-watching cruise was a hit, and the dolphins showed off nicely! The day ended with a visit to The Jepson Centre for the Arts and the Fun Zone for friendly competition with classmates and teachers.
The adventure wrapped up with sightseeing along River Street and Forsyth Park before a final stop at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. There, students gained insight into the crucial role this military group played in liberating Nazi-occupied Europe, bringing their journey to a meaningful and educational close.
A Captivating Class Trip
Seventh graders explored the nation's capital, starting with the Air Force Memorial and the Pentagon’s 9-11 Memorial. They then took in city views from the Washington Monument before visiting Arlington National Cemetery, where Ashlynn Richards, Zach Litteral, Dylan Carter, and Grant Hamilton participated in a wreath-laying ceremony on behalf of George Walton Academy.
Day two included a guided Capitol tour, followed by a trip to Gettysburg, where students explored key Civil War battle sites. On day three, they visited the Udvar-Hazy Center, seeing aircraft like the Enola Gay and Challenger. They then explored the Holocaust Museum and the Spy Museum before a nighttime stop at the Lincoln Memorial.
The final day featured visits to the Jefferson, MLK Jr., FDR, and Vietnam Memorials, plus a White House tour where they met Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. The trip concluded with Smithsonian visits before flying home. A fantastic experience for all!
Learning Without Limits
Classroom learning came to life as the eighth-grade class ventured to Georgia state parks dedicated to preserving Native American heritage at Etowah Indian Mounds and New Echota. Next, students enjoyed scientific marvels and exhibits at the Tellus Museum in Cartersville. They continued north to Chattanooga for lessons on geography and space, including a simulated journey to Mars and visits to Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain. The trip concluded in Dahlonega, where they discovered Georgia’s gold rush history. Along the way, students captured memories, bought souvenirs, and enjoyed an unforgettable experience.
