News to Use...
It's all about the books!
Book check out is in full swing for this school year and it is so much fun to hear the squeals of Book Joy when a student finds the perfect book to take home.
Our students at Grant Watts can check out 2 books a week and our OPE students can check out 3 and they can keep them for 2 weeks before they are overdue. If students want to keep books longer they can renew them during their library time. SMS and SHS students can check out and renew books at their leisure from Mrs. Gayman and Mrs. McNabb. Warren students do not check out books at this time, but we are working towards that goal for, hopefully, next school year.
We have sent home lost/damaged notices through email. We will also be handing them out in the elementary libraries soon - PLEASE look around the house, check the nooks and crannies of the car and look at the babysitter's or grandma's house to help find these books! We currently have almost $800 in lost books that were not returned last year and we don't have the funds to replace them - please try to find your lost books and return them to school at your earliest convenience.
We really appreciate all your help in returning books on time to make sure everyone gets a chance to check out ALL the books! Thank you!
What's Happening in our Schools...
Warren Elementary
This week we had our first Book Look Time after our story and it warmed my heart to see so many kiddos choosing to look at books the entire time versus switching to Maker-Space time. It is going to be so much fun growing this library and getting more and more great books in the hands of our little Eagles!
We celebrated International Dot Day by reading The Dot by Peter Reynolds, it is such an encouraging and inspiring story. This next week we are going to do a project to go along with the book and I can't wait to see how it turns out! Watch for photos next week.
Grant Watts Elementary
This week we had a lot of fun with our first book check out of the year! I love watching the excitement of the kids when they find their special books! Below is a quick reminder of who has library on which days. Please make sure books are back to school by 8:15 the morning of their library day so they can get new books each week - this is really important for our 1st graders who are practicing with one book this week; if they bring that one back next week, they will get to check out 2 books during their next library time! We currently have 26 lost books totaling $377 dollars that were not returned last year - please take a look around and try to find these lost books or settle the fines to replace them, students with lost books are unable to check out books until their accounts return to good standing. Thanks for your help!
Here are the library days for the classes:
Tuesday - Hiller, King, Zieres, SLC, Gonzales
Wednesday - Byrd, Brubaker, Harbour, Ziels, Bailey. Neilson
Thursday - Wentz, Greisen, Darco, Backus, Schrotzberger, Rodrigue
We have started Library Lunch Recess access for 2nd and 3rd graders - during this time on Tuesdays, students can quietly read, write, draw or color and on Thursdays they can use the Maker-Space for creating and building with engaging, hands-on activities.
We could use some volunteers on Tuesdays! If you are interested, please sign up HERE!
Make sure to stop by the Library on Back to School Night on 9/25!
Please stop by the Library for a visit during Back to School Night! I will have information for Oregon Battle of the Books and Digital Navigators AND I will have free reading tattoos! Hope to see you there!
Otto Petersen Elementary
Our students are enjoying getting to check out books! Please remember to settle all fines and return all books from last year so your check out privileges aren't impacted - we currently have over $200 in lost books that didn't find their way back to the library before summer break, including several books that need to get back to Grant Watts from our 4th grade students. Thank you for your help in getting all our books back on the shelves and helping our students keep their accounts in good standing.
This week we refreshed our learning about the Dewey Decimal System - our kids are doing a great job learning the library layout and how to navigate the shelves to find their own books. There is something really empowering when you can create your own inquiries and then find the books you are looking for!
Could you help our team shelve returned books or help keep our shelves in working order? If so, please sign up HERE!

What is Mrs. Nudo Reading?
Still reading A LOT of children's picture books for a big book project I am working on for Warren and Grant Watts. And, I found so many more great new books this week - I can't wait to share all of them with the kids throughout the next few weeks!
Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)...
OBOB returns to Grant Watts and gains traction at OPE, SMS and Sauvie Island School!
We are SO excited for the OBOB season this year as we have a renewed enthusiasm district-wide! We are currently raising money for books, we have great community support and we are hoping to host our regional tournament for grades 3-5 and 6-8 right here in Scappoose.
Our amazing Mrs. Richard at OPE is our OBOB coordinator and she will be hosting an information night very soon for parents and we will be sharing info with our students in the library very soon. Please watch for more details to be coming home soon!
We are looking for coaches to support our teams, we are looking for participants to enjoy these awesome books and competitively absorb the adventures and facts, AND we are looking for volunteers to help fund book purchases and be physical helpers at battles and our regional tournament.
Please reach out to Mrs. Nudo if you can help us out: 971-290-8133 talk/text or knudo@scappoose.k12.or.us
COMING SOON... Digital Navigators
I am working with a nationwide organization to help support families with online/digital issues our students are facing - digital citizenship, real life/screen life balance, cyberbullying and so much more. Please check back next week - I am still working on collecting all the info to share, but I am almost there! We will also have some opportunities to come together and talk about these issues, so if that is something you are interested in for your family, please check this section each week!
