CSTP Spotlight π€©
CSTP 1: Engaging and Supporting All Students
CSTP 1, Engaging and Supporting All Students is defined as "Teachers apply knowledge about each student to activate an approach to learning that strengthens and reinforces each studentβs participation, engagement, connection, and sense of belonging."
We will highlight an element each week in October.
CSTP 1B: Knowledge of Students
Teachers elicit and solicit knowledge of each studentβs assets and needs, including cognitive, cultural and linguistic, socialβemotional, and physical and developmental capacities, in the service of increasing active engagement in learning.
Element 1B Example Indicators
Teachers:
1Bβ1: Affirm each studentβs cultural, linguistic, and racial identities by actively seeking knowledge and approaches for creating culturally and linguistically responsive and sustaining learning opportunities.
1Bβ2: Create learning opportunities that draw on studentsβ interests, prior experiences, culture, and linguistic assets to support active engagement for each learner.
1Bβ3: Integrate student voice in planning and sustaining classroom structures and practices by including student participation and encouraging students to provide feedback.
1Bβ4: Provide learning experiences for language acquisition, using evidence-based approaches that leverage studentsβ linguistic assets and address the diverse needs of all students.
1Bβ5: Respond to and implement support for studentsβ socialβemotional well-being and mental health needs, including those of students who have experienced trauma, homelessness or other situations.
CSTP 1 Instructional Strategy Support
While it's early in the school year, consider giving a student interest and asset survey to ensure you know what each student is bringing to the classroom. You might find out some interesting hobbies or skills you didn't even know about! If you've already given one, this is a good time to review it.
Candidate and Mentor Talking Points π¬
Each week we will provide several talking points that should be reviewed during your weekly meetings together.
- Discuss Classroom Routines/Management (Reflecting and Adjusting Consistently)
- Instructional Environment (Safety) and Room Setup
- Communicating with parents
- Great ways to incorporate additional SEL strategies
- Engagement and strategies to keep lessons flowing
