Something Very Fishy Virtual Reality Experience

This fall Something Very Fishy will return to upstate South Carolina (Oconee, Pickens, Anderson) with a new experience - virtual reality! Student (grades 3-5) who are involved in this program will be able to experience marine science the way it is meant to be experienced... underwater. This program is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is also contingent on willingness to participate in a study on the effects of virtual reality within the classroom (done as part of the visit). If you are interested in signing up your class or just want more information, please click on the green button below and fill out this Google form. We will contact you about availability and scheduling in August!

Saving Our Country's Longest and Oldest Coral Reef

At 350 miles in length, the Florida Reef Tract is the third largest coral reef in the world. And most importantly, it is the only US coral reef you can reach by car. As a result, millions of tourists travel to Florida to enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing on south Florida's coral reefs. These activities provide a great source of income for Florida and its coastal communities. It is estimated that coral reef activities generate $3.4 billion in sales in general and income and support 36,000 jobs in the region each year.

But all that love comes with a heavy cost to the health of the reef. What we need is a plan to help turn things around and save our coral reef before it is gone forever. Take a journey to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary on this story map virtual tour and hear what folks are saying about what we can all do to help save this national treasure. Our first research paper on the Something Very Fishy STEAM Exhibit was just published in the journal Environmental Communication. The article is titled "Something Very Fishy: An Informal STEAM Project Making a Case for Ocean Conservation and Climate Change".
