Principal's Message
Happy New Year! We are off to a good start of the second semester. Students were reminded of our West Way expectations. I also let 6th graders know that they have turned the corner of being new to middle school and the grace that was shown first semester will be lessened. They have responded great and I look forward to seeing their progress.
Chromebook Use
We have observed an increase in students creating and using group chats on Google Documents to communicate with one another during class time and outside of instructional hours. These chats are distracting students from learning and interfering with classroom instruction.
Please be reminded that student Chromebooks are the property of GJPS and are provided solely to support academic learning. These devices can be monitored by school staff at any time, and students are expected to use them responsibly and appropriately.
Expectations for Chromebook Use
- Chromebooks are to be used for school-related work only.
- Students should not use Chromebooks for socializing, personal messaging, group chats, or non-academic communication during class.
Consequences for Misuse
If a student uses their Chromebook or school accounts for unauthorized communication or social group chats:
-
1st offense: Warning and parent/guardian notification.
-
2nd offense: Restriction of Chromebook privileges for a period of time.
-
3rd offense: Further disciplinary action consistent with the GJPS student code of conduct which may include extended loss of device privileges and administrative consequences.
Please understand that these measures are in place to protect instructional time, maintain a focused learning environment, and ensure responsible technology use.
How You Can Help
We encourage you to talk with your student about responsible Chromebook use:
-
Set clear expectations at home about when and how school devices should be used.
-
Ask your student to show you their schoolwork or the sites/apps they are using.
-
Reinforce that school technology is not to be used for personal social communication.
Thank you for your partnership in helping our students stay focused, respectful, and productive.
