8th Grade Dance
We are excited to celebrate our 8th graders and their transition to high school at a dance from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 12th. Tickets are $3 each at the door. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. This dance is only for 8th grade students who attend SMS.
This is NOT a formal dance or a prom. The dress code will be enforced, so students should plan their attire accordingly.
Students MUST attend school the day of the dance. Students cannot have discipline on the day of the dance and cannot have earned 2 or more demerits for aggressive or illegal behavior since our last dance on March 17th. Students WILL be allowed to have cell phones at the dance.
All attendees will receive a free class photo.
Cool Ray Field Trip
Students learned about the academic/program offerings at each campus.
Summer Basketball Camps at Hanover College
We received the following information from Jon Miller, the basketball coach at Hanover College, regarding their 56th Annual Boys’ Summer Basketball Camps. They are offering three camps:
June 12-15 Skills & Play Day Camp
June 27-29 Post/Perimeter Overnight Camp
July 5-7 Fundamental Skills Overnight Camp
Of note for local boys is the Skills & Play Day Camp. It is open to boys who will be entering grades 3-8 in Fall 2023 and runs from 9AM-4PM each day. This could be a great opportunity for boys to work on basketball and also get to experience a college campus. Each day during lunch break the students will go on small “mini-tours” of different parts of campus (Dorms, Library, Science Center, etc) so that they can get some exposure to other parts of a college too. Instructors at all the camps will be the Hanover College coaching staff and players.
The camp brochure is pictured above. The online registration for all camps can be found here: https://hanovermensbasketball.ryzerevents.com/register.cfm

Also, as Officer Nicholson reminded you during his classroom visits, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings, including traffic, at all times.
Student Handbook Update
The Scottsburg MS student handbook contains some significant updates for the 2022-2023 school year. The most significant changes took place in the discipline section.
Here are the highlights of three changes that will impact the largest number of students:
Cell phones are still not allowed to be used during the school day here at SMS. Phones are expected to be turned off and stored in lockers. Students who are carrying a cell phone or using a cell phone during the school day are in violation. The consequences for each situation are outlined in the handbook.
Second is illegal substances. This year students who have illegal substances and/or paraphernalia (most common examples are vapes, cigarettes, or alcohol) will be recommended for expulsion on the first offense.
In an attempt to be more aligned with the high school discipline policy, we will be following a progressive discipline approach. This means that when a student commits the same offense multiple times, the discipline will get progressively more serious. Each example is outlined in the doc that is provided by clicking on the picture above or via the link below.
SMS Student Handbook
We encourage you to read the handbook with your child(ren) and to contact us with any questions you may have.
We are looking forward to working with our students and their parents throughout the upcoming school year.
