Weekly Update
February 6, 2026
PRINCIPAL GREETING
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope you are staying safe and warm and that the Groundhog's prediction for 6 more weeks of winter is not accurate. If you are looking to get out of the cold, our playoff season continues to heat up. Swimming had a great Round One playoff win this week and both Boys and Girls Bowling begin their playoff run next week. The remainder of playoffs will commence shortly after.
Additionally, our Jazz band is gearing up for a great performance later this month as well as a very competitive Robotics Competiong shortly after, hosted right here at our middle school.
As we continue into Quarter 3, we are already scheduling with students for next school year. Please be sure to continue to check for updates via email and this newsletter for more exciting events and activities coming soon!

Class of 2027 Families
Senior Trip will be here before we know it! This year’s trip to Disney World costs about $2000. In order to help lighten the load of the scheduled payments beginning next September, we are allowing you the opportunity to make pre-payments beginning in January 2026. Pre-payments in any amount can be made at any time via cash or check payable to “NBC Class of 2027” and will go towards your trip balance. Any pre-payments will come off your final scheduled payments next year. Any student wishing to go on the trip will still be required to make the first payment in September, no matter how much they have prepaid. If you make pre-payments and your student decides not to go, we can give you a full refund in September. If your student
decides not to go on the trip after September, they may only receive a partial refund. All payments can be brought to Mrs. Duff in room 406.

Local Food Resources for New Jersey Families
SFAs may be experiencing increased calls from families concerned about the potential loss of SNAP benefits on November 1st. Please note the New Jersey Basic Needs Information Hub offers a comprehensive listing of websites that can assist households in locating a local food pantry or soup kitchen. Families may also choose to access the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Food Bank of South Jersey, Fulfill, Norwescap, and Mercer Street Friends websites directly to search for local food resources.
Thank you for providing these important resources to families at this time, and for your unwavering work to ensure New Jersey students receive healthy, nutritious meals every day.
Clinical Corner
The time after the holidays can often seem to drag on until spring sometimes bringing with it Seasonal affective disorder for some. An article by The American Psychiatric Association describes Seasonal affective disorder(also known as SAD) as a form of depression and can also be called Winter depression or officially, as in the DSM-5 it is Major Depression with Seasonal Pattern. It is more common in women than in men and affects about five percent of the adults in the U.S. The article reports that January and February tend to be the most difficult months for people with SAD in the U.S. Interestingly, it can also occur, although not as often, in the summer months as well.
Some symptoms to be on the lookout for are:
Sad or depressed mood
Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
Change in sleep, usually more than usual.
Loss of energy/increased fatigue
Difficulty concentrating/making decisions
Feeling worthless or guilty
One therapeutic treatment for SAD is light therapy, which involves sitting in front of a light therapy box that emits a very bright light for about 20 minutes a day. Some people start this therapy in early fall, in anticipation of symptoms returning or worsening in the winter. Just like in the treatment of major depression, making an effort to care for yourself with good nutrition, regular sleep and exercise as well as socializing to stay connected to others should all help. And of course seeing a therapist to talk about things rounds out the treatment. If you or someone you are close with struggle at this time of the year, this article is a good place to start so one doesn’t have to suffer all winter long.
