Culture Presentations in Social Studies Culture Presentations in Social Studies

Our 6th grade social studies classes recently wrapped up their culture unit with an engaging series of student presentations and a vibrant cultural celebration. Each student selected a country of personal interest and explored its traditions, customs, holidays, clothing, food, and more. Their presentations showcased impressive research skills and genuine curiosity about the world around them. To culminate the unit, students participated in a cultural celebration where they brought in foods representing their chosen countries and students played traditional games.

A special thank you to Mr. West for ensuring this unit continues year after year, and to Mrs. Rossi for preparing lots of food, and for researching and gathering materials for the games!

Our next DHEMS Dance/Fun Night will be held on Friday, December 12 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. There is a $5 entrance fee, and students may also bring money for snacks and drinks. Parents, please help us promote a safe and enjoyable environment by reviewing the following information with your child:

  • Students should arrive no earlier than 6:55 PM, and be picked up promptly at 9:00 PM. Please arrange with your child where you will be picking them up. This helps avoid confusion and helps our chaperones to get home at a decent time!
  • Students must remain inside for the entirety of the dance. Students are not permitted to leave the dance early.
  • Our cell phone policy is in effect during the dance. Students' cell phones should be turned off and are not permitted to be used during the dance.
  • Our dress code policy is in effect during the dance. Please review the DHEMS student handbook if you have any questions about our dress code.
  • Students should not bring backpacks or bags to the dance.

Fall Play Fall Play

This year’s DHEMS Fall Play, Rotten Apples by Tracy Wells, was a tremendous success and a true showcase of our students’ talent, creativity, and teamwork. Set on a dark and stormy night, the comedy brought fairy-tale heroes and villains together on stage as they attempted to uncover the name of a meddlesome imp before midnight—all while dealing with power outages and a string of mysteriously unconscious guests. With three possible endings, audiences enjoyed a unique twist at each performance.

A total of 28 student actors brought the story to life with energy and humor, while 30 dedicated crew members worked behind the scenes to design and paint the set, create props, manage costumes, and run lights and sound. Their hard work transformed the stage and ensured every performance ran smoothly. Thank you to Mrs. McLaughlin, Mrs. Walter, and our parent volunteers for making this happen!

The enthusiasm from our cast, crew, families, and community made this year’s production one of our most memorable yet. We are incredibly proud of our students for their commitment to the arts and for putting on such a delightful show!

Haunted Castles in 6th Grade ELA Haunted Castles in 6th Grade ELA

6th Grade ELA classes spent two days in the library researching the history and folklore of some of Europe’s most haunted castles. This STEAM activity combined research skills with Ms. Pauling, along with valuable reading and collaboration skills to engineer replicas of their castles out of marshmallows and toothpicks. The winners were crowned after tough deliberation by the judges.

Ann Dzwonchyk, the Community Health Coordinator from WellSpan Evangelical, spoke with our 6th grade students about the dangers and long-term consequences of using tobacco products. During her presentation, students learned about the harmful effects of cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, including how these products are often marketed in ways that appeal specifically to young people.

One of the most impactful parts of the presentation was a demonstration using a real set of pig lungs. Students were able to observe firsthand how smoking damages lung tissue, helping them make a powerful connection between these choices and their health. The presentation supported the important discussions we have in health class and encouraged students to make informed, healthy decisions.
