Build Math Minds
"Choral Counting and Counting Collections" - Episode 51
Counting isn't just something that PreK, kindergarten, and first grade are responsible for. All of our students can (and should) be counting in math! Whether students are counting by ones, skip counting by 5s or 10s, or even counting by unit fractions, counting matters! Choral counting is a great way for you to model how to count and to allow students to build confidence and notice patterns. Recording what students say as they count aloud adds an additional layer of support for our students. This is a no-prep number sense activity if you ever need to fill 2 or 3 minutes.
"Choral counting gives young students opportunities to work on how to say a number - integers, fractions, and decimals - and see the number in its written form. As teachers make posters and anchor charts, they can leave these up in their classrooms so students can continue to study how to write particular numbers. Students can refer to these charts as they record their collections when engaging in counting collections activities."

Small Groups Following Math MAP
It is a district expectation that students are successfully completing at least 5 lessons on DreamBox each week. While your students are on DreamBox, you have the opportunity to pull small groups. After last week's faculty meeting, this may be a goal that you have! If you need help forming groups or deciding what to teach students in these small groups to help close gaps and push students, let me know! Here is an example of teaching points Kari Doster and I worked to pull for a small group of her students who needs targeted instruction in geometry and scored in the 160s RIT band on their most recent Math MAP test.
Family Math Night
We will host Family Math Night on Thursday, March 14. We will serve pizza, drinks, and dessert from 5:30 until 6:00 and will allow families to enjoy math stations and activities from 6:00 until 7:00. Please share this flyer and the RSVP link on your Class Dojo account! More information and volunteer sign-ups will be available in the next week or so. I would love to have your help!

Final Math MTSS Schedule Update
You should have heard from Anita and Leslie last week regarding their new schedules. They will begin to follow these schedules this week. Please be flexible with them as they pick-up and drop-off students. If you run into any major issues with the time a student is being served, please speak with them or let me know so that we can work towards a solution. A huge shoutout to these ladies!
Q3 Instructional Slides Update
Math coaches have been creating instructional slides for all standards. The goal is for these slides to be student-facing to help make sure you are teaching to the level of the standard and not over or under teaching. These slides are aligned to learning targets and common assessments and include material lists, teacher notes for instructional delivery, mini-lesson slides, independent practice activities, and debrief questions. These are a great starting point for you as you plan.
All Q3 slides are published with the exception of:
- K.ATO.1 (11 instructional days) - Katie Sidney Creating Now
- K.G.4 (7 instructional days)
- 1.ATO.8 (4 instructional days)
- 1.MDA.3 (3 instructional days)
