Superintendent's Message
SPS Community,
Over the last two weeks we hosted information meetings at each elementary school to discuss the process for evaluating our elementary school portfolio. We had 347 people attend the 5 sessions and received extensive feedback and questions that we have shared with the School Committee. Please find the presentation we shared at these sessions here and a video of the virtual conversation with the Bentley Academy/Salem Early Childhood Center community on Thursday, October 30th.
As we explained during these community conversations, we want to encourage all of our families and community members to attend or watch the Monday, November 3rd School Committee meeting at 7 p.m. (Collins Middle School Chamber, Room 227). The consultants working on this project, Dr. Sarah Faude and Dr. Daniel Anderson, will share a comprehensive presentation on our elementary schools. They will provide us with a variety of scenarios, findings and recommendations for the School Committee to consider regarding the future state of elementary schools in Salem. At Monday’s session, we will also share opportunities for the public to offer their thoughts and ideas regarding the presentation.
We hope that you can join us for Monday’s session. For those interested in watching from home, the meeting will be viewable on Zoom (Spanish and Portuguese interpretation will be available on zoom) - Watch the Meeting on Zoom (Passcode 633180). Additionally, residents with Comcast can watch on television - channel 008.
On Tuesday morning we will send out a video link of the meeting as well as a copy of the presentation for our community to review. The video of the meeting will also be available on
the Salem Access TV YouTube Page.
We hope you have a safe, enjoyable Halloween Weekend! Enjoy!
Steve
During Principal Appreciation Month, we received a Magical Moments That Matter nomination for Collins Middle School Principal Gavin Softic. His steadfast commitment ensures that CMS is not only a high-performing academic institution, but also a place where every student feels known, connected, seen, and heard. He cultivates a true sense of belonging through the way he leads with integrity and care, advances equity by ensuring all students have access to the support they need, and creates opportunity through the growth he has driven—evident in CMS’s progress in both achievement and accountability. Mr. Softic is an empathetic leader who always listens and keeps students at the center of every decision he makes.

ATTENTION FAMILIES: Please Complete Your Back-to-School Forms
We are eight weeks into the school year, but we have only received Back-to-School forms from a small percentage of our families.
All it takes is 10 minutes, and we strongly urge our families to complete their back to school forms as soon as possible.
We cannot emphasize enough how we need to have the most updated information on our students in case of emergency situations. Our families can update their forms by logging into their accounts on Aspen, the link for which is below.
