"The Best is Yet to Come"

Dear parents and friends of Schaab Scholars,

I know we are on break, but I felt it important to share with you a class update as I'm reflecting with my coffee this morning. Please take a moment to read until the end as I have a few important needs at the end!

What a week before break! We were so busy with learning in addition to prepare for an amazing holiday sing. In reading we were focusing on how to be better non fiction readers, learning different strategies to help us understand complex text, and to connect with what we are reading. It is so important over break to read every day, whether it be fiction or nonfiction, please make sure your scholar is taking time to read every day. We'll continue our non fiction study after break.

In math, we wrapped up our unit on division. Students will be getting their tests back when we return from break, and we'll be moving on to to Fractions. We'll continue practicing the division algorithm and problem solving with interpreting remainders. Please keep up practicing basic multiplication and division facts!

In writing, in addition to working on drafting a persuasive piece, we are also going to be working on word sorts, to help us develop our vocabulary and spelling skills. This isn't a spelling list, but more so focusing on word patterns and sorting words. Students are being placed into groups after taking a developmental spelling test before break.

Upon our return, we'll be starting a new science unit about Energy. This is a fantastic hands on unit where we'll be doing lots of fun experiments about how energy and motion are related. I know that when we start science on Tuesday, the Scholars will be so excited! I'll be posting pictures/videos to keep track of our learning. Stay tuned!

A few important reminders:

  • Please click on the link below for the supply list. I want to make sure everyone has the school supplies that they need to be successful as a request for a 1 1/2 inch Avery Clearview Binder for goal setting.
  • Two Flipgrid Book reviews are due by the Monday we return from break. These were assigned on December 1st. Scholars have access to the link in Google Classroom - Schaab Scholars. 1 book needs to be fiction, the other book needs to be non fiction. These are summaries about the books to hook readers to want to read more - don't give away the ending!
  • I will be completing Component 4 of National Board Certification this spring. In order to reflect (really write about) on my teaching and scholars learning, I need your permission for your child's work to be used for me to reflect on. If you are not comfortable with your child's work being used, simply check the no box and I'll choose not to feature it in my write up. If you have any questions, please let me know, and I'd be happy to chat with you about it! A hard copy will be coming home when we return, but I linked it below just in case you wanted to take a peek beforehand.
  • Please wash and repack an ART SMOCK for art on Monday. These were in backpacks before the holidays so our lockers could get cleaned out.
  • Thank you so much for my generous and thoughtful holiday gifts. I am beyond grateful for each token of appreciation. I'm lucky to have such wonderful students and families, who know me really well!

I hope all families are enjoying plenty of time relaxing and recharging over break. I'm excited to see all of the Scholars back in action on Monday, January 8th!
