THE LIONS DEN
Schweitzer Newsletter January 2025
Dear Albert Schweitzer community,
January has been a busy and productive month for learning and assessing student growth! Students completed middle-of-the-year i-Ready assessments in math and reading. K-2 and additional students in Grades 3/4 also had reading skills assessed on DIBELS. This data is helpful in understanding current levels of students and designing appropriate instruction to target growth. Please be sure to view below on accessing your child's data through LinkIt!, our district data warehouse.
February is also 'Healthy Heart Month!' Friday, February 7th is National GO RED Day. Once again, Schweitzer will wear red to raise awareness for cardiovascular health and raise money for the America Heart Association. Please have your child wear red and bring a donation to school on Friday. ($1-$5 suggested donation) Families can also donate directly to the PTO Venmo (@Albert-SchweitzerPTO). Please just indicate 'Schweitzer GO RED' on the Venmo message.
We just hosted our Scholastic Book Fair. What a success! We put approximately 1,500 books in the hands of our students. Amazing! Families have until Thursday, February 6th to go online to our Albert Schweitzer Scholastic website to purchase books that provide Scholastic Dollars for our school. Our Title I Literacy night for grades 3 & 4 was also a huge success. Thank you to those families that joined us for the event, and thank you for your home/school partnership.
Here's to Happy Reading and Healthy Hearts!

Title I News at Albert Schweitzer
As a Title I school, it's important that we keep families and our school community well informed about activities and important information related to Title I. Please enjoy the most recent Title I Family Engagement Newsletter below.
Roaring Readers-Literacy Night for Grades 3 & 4
Albert Schweitzer Elementary's Roaring Readers celebrated a love of literacy and encouraged family engagement on Wednesday evening, January 29. Students from Grades 3 and 4 participated in a Title I Literacy Night full of fun activities, take-home materials, and a student showcase. Schweitzer reading specialists and third and fourth grade teachers hosted sessions on comparing/contrasting, building vocabulary, and retelling. Families learned how to make reading fun and walked away with great ideas to support literacy in the home. Students showcased their love of reading by dressing as their favorite character/author, reading from a favorite book, or creating a book project to show to families. Students and families also visited the Book Fair as part of the event.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a national non-profit organization that focuses on girls in third through fifth grades. The program is run by Albert Schweitzer staff who are trained as GOTR coaches. Mrs. Moyer and Mrs. Dupoldt are the lead coaches, and there are many other staff members that are volunteer coaches that join each week as well. Hydroponics in Grade 3
Third grade is currently running a science exploration about growing plants without soil. Hydroponics allows our plants to get everything they normally get from the soil, from the water instead.
Students have currently germinated romaine lettuce seeds and are preparing to transplant them into our Kratky Tub, which is filled with nutrients, water and air. Students are estimated to harvest their lettuce heads around the start of Spring Break, April 16th. Stay tuned!

Fourth Grade Authors Hold Book Signing
Students in 4th grade researched and wrote an expository essay on an animal of their choosing. Each class went through the writing process and became authors and illustrators of published books. Caregivers were invited to come and listen to each student read their writing piece. They enjoyed signing books like real authors and received a certificate.
