Rosemont Roundup
September 2026
Brief Message From Principal Mottinger
Families of the Academy at Rosemont,
Welcome to the Rosemont Roundup, our monthly, schoolwide email filled with important information for students, staff, and families. Please take time to read through the updates and celebrate the amazing things happening at the Academy at Rosemont!
We had an amazing first week of school! As I begin my second year as principal, I am reminded how fortunate I am to serve this incredible community. I can proudly say that there is no better school in Norfolk. We have the very best students, staff, and families. Thank you for your continued support of the Academy at Rosemont.
Fall sports are upon us! Academy at Rosemont students may participate in baseball, softball, track, cheer, wrestling, and sailing. Please be sure your student has a current physical on file. Best of luck to all of our student-athletes this season!
Beginning the week of September 21, after-school tutoring and clubs will begin. Tuesdays will be academic stay-back days for students who need to make up missing work, ask questions, or receive extra support and remediation. Thursdays will be dedicated to clubs and student organizations. Students will have opportunities to participate in Lego Shipbuilding, Robotics, FBLA, intramural sports, Chess Club, Model UN, Canstruction Club, and more. Additional details about club meeting times and dates will be shared soon.
Tutor.com is also a wonderful, free resource available to all of our students. It is a great tool for homework help and extra academic support at home.
Our Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, at 5:00 p.m. All families are invited to spend the evening at the best school in Norfolk! You will have the opportunity to follow your studentβs schedule, meet their teachers, and learn about the exciting things happening in each classroom. We will begin promptly at 5:00 p.m., so please plan to arrive a few minutes early.
Finally, please continue to join and support our PTA if you have not already done so. We are working toward 100% family participation, and your involvement helps make a meaningful difference for our students and school community.
We are Rosemont!

ππ Pick-Up and Drop-Off Safety ππ
Important Information for Morning and Afternoon Pick-Up and Drop-Off
Student Drop-Off in the Mornings:
In the morning, parent drop-off is ONLY on Tanners Creek Road. Students should not be dropped off in the parking lot. Parents should not drive in the bus loop for any reason in the morning.
Student Pick-Up in the Afternoons:
In the afternoon, pick-up is ONLY on Tanners Creek Road. ALL parents should pull up next to the sidewalk on the SCHOOL SIDE. Parents should not park on the opposite side of the road. This creates an unsafe environment for your child. The line up does not take long if the cars continue to pick up and move up. Many parents park on the other side of the road and get out of the car to pick up the student. WE DO NOT CODONE THIS PRACTICE for the safety of the students. We will not cross the students as we do not have a crossing guard for the crosswalk.
Student Pick-Up for Tuesday and Thursday After School Activities:
In order to safely monitor students involved in Extra-Curricular Activities, all parent pick-up at 4:30 pm should be in the school parking lot. Parents should line up the cars, not park, and move up as students are being picked up. Please DO NOT block the buses from being able to pull into the Bus line. Cars SHOULD NOT enter the bus lane. Students should wait for parents to pick them up at the "island" of grass in between the bus lane and the parking lot.

Indicate on your application the level of volunteering because this will determine the type of background check required by RAPTOR. After an individual applies to be a volunteer, RAPTOR cross-references your information against national sex offender databases, in addition to any specific school alerts used to prohibit offenders or those with criminal records.
Applications take 7 to 14 business days to be processed. The RAPTOR volunteer approval
process requires a fee of either $8 to $18 depending on your level of volunteer service. This fee is
to be paid by the volunteer.
Once the application is approved, volunteers will receive and email to set up your volunteer portal.

This fall, our Rosemont students are invited to enter the National PTAβs Reflections Contest. Students will submit original theme-based artwork in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography or visual arts. This competition encourages students to explore the arts and express themselves by providing positive recognition for their artistic efforts. The theme of this yearβs contest is βWhat My Culture Means To Meβ. Please encourage your students to participate.
In previous years several of our students at Rosemont have placed in the state competition. We look forward to seeing and hearing your entries. If you have any questions, please contact us at ptsa4rosemont@gmail.com.

Understanding Our Young Adult (YA) Collection
The Academy at Rosemont Media Center is proud to offer a thoughtfully curated Young Adult (YA) collection designed to support students as they grow as readers and individuals. YA literature is written for older adolescents and often features engaging, relevant stories that reflect the real-life experiences and questions teens may encounter.
All titles in our collection are selected in alignment with the districtβs established book selection and collection development policy. We use professional review sources, publisher age recommendations, and recognized literary standards to guide our decisions and ensure a balanced, high-quality collection.
Because YA books are written for older teens, some titles may explore mature themes such as relationships, mental health, identity, substance use, or other complex topics. We believe these stories can provide meaningful opportunities for reflection, discussion, and personal growth. We also recognize the importance of family involvement in studentsβ reading choices. ALL TITLES IN THE COLLECTION MAY POTENTIALLY BE YA.
As an open access district, students have access to the full library collection available at their school. We do not implement opt-in or opt-out systems for sections of the collection. However, we strongly encourage families to have ongoing conversations with their children about reading preferences. Parents who wish to request limitations for their individual child may contact the school library to discuss options on a case-by-case basis.
Our goal is to maintain a balanced approach that supports literacy, respects family partnership, protects intellectual freedom, and encourages students to become thoughtful, engaged readers.
If you have any questions about our collection, please feel free to reach out. We value your partnership in supporting our studentsβ reading journeys.
Library Wishlist
Here is a list of titles that have been requested by staff and students. If you would like to purchase any of these to add to the collection, your generosity would be appreciated!
