Student Announcements

Hi families of 11th and 12th grade students!

We recently shared a presentation with our 11th and 12th grade students about our upcoming prom, junior cruise, and end of year "traditions". I want to share with you all exactly what we presented to our students. If we work together, we can ensure that all of our students remain safe and have a great end of the year.

Big stuff that I don't want to get lost in the length of this smore: 1) Taking the bus to and from prom is mandatory. 2) In accordance with our new breathalyzer policy, all students will be breathalyzed for prom.

Senior class

We reminded our senior class students that:

  1. We still have 2 months left of school- the last day for seniors is May 25th.

  2. We ask that you encourage your student to avoid "senioritis": A supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school, characterized by a decline in motivation and performance. Here is our advice:

  • Remind your student that colleges, universities, and employers continue to track student grades and behavior during their last semester of high school. College matriculation is ultimately dependent on maintaining a strong GPA/conduct record.
  • Emphasize to your student that poor behavior in school will not be excused due to "being a senior."
  • Encourage your student to set goals for the end of the year.

Senior Assassins is neither school-sanctioned nor permitted

What is senior assassins?

A game where members of the senior class pool money to participate. Students are then assigned targets and use water guns to "eliminate" peers from the game. Please note that this game is NOT sanctioned or permitted by the school.

Assassins is a bad idea for many reasons including:

  • Water guns look scarily similar to true weapons which can put our students in dangerous and scary situations.
  • Think about how an outsider/stranger will interpret the situation without context.
  • Some behavior associated with assassins looks suspicious and may cause people to report it as such, thus creating unnecessarily heightened situations.

Senior & Junior Skip Days are neither sanctioned nor permitted

Seniors are notorious for choosing a date for the entire class to skip school. This is NOT permitted by the school and there are consequences.

To our juniors: You are not seniors. You still have a year left in your high school career and you should not be giving up. There will be NO tolerance for you creating a junior skip day.

To our seniors: If you decide to partake in Senior Skip Day, you will:

  1. NOT be excused from school
  2. Be in danger of losing credit in accordance with the student handbook

Seniors only have 3 unexcused absences in quarter 4 of the school year. This is critical to remember as college matriculation is often contingent upon successful completion of senior year.

Chemical Health Violation Consequences

Chemical Health Substances include but are not limited to: alcohol, nicotine products, and drugs.

Graduation

Please be aware that if a senior has a chemical health violation during the week following the last day of classes (5/25) and graduation (6/2), they will NOT be allowed to walk at graduation.

Sports

The MIAA chemical health rule is as follows:

  • 1st offense students will lose 25% of the season
  • 2nd offense students will lose 60% of the season

Legal Consequences:

Many seniors are of legal age (18) and will be in legal trouble if they have a chemical health violation and break the law.

An Important Note on Social Host Liability

Social Host Liability: M.G.L Chapter 138 Section 34:

"Whoever furnishes any such beverage of alcohol for a person under 21 years of age shall be punished by a fine no more than $2,000 or by imprisonment not more than one year or both."

For the purpose of this section, the word "furnish" shall mean to knowingly or intentionally supply, give, or provide to or allow a person under 21 years of age except for the children and grandchildren of the person being charged, to possess alcoholic beverages on premises or property owned by or controlled by the person charged.

How can we keep our students safe?

  1. Know where your teenager will be throughout the evening and find out their transportation plans.
  2. DO NOT give your teenager permission to attend a party where you know alcohol will be served.
  3. Talk openly with your teens about the dangers of underage drinking and drinking and driving. Remind them about all the people that love them, as well as their future dreams- college, a particular career, travel plans, etc..
  4. Tell your teen that they can ALWAYS call for a ride home at any time of the night. It is better for your child to leave a potentially dangerous situation than to stay out of fear of getting in trouble at home.
  5. Create a "code word" with your teen so that they can easily tell you that they are in a bad situation and need to be picked up.
  6. Set firm guidelines and make a reasonable curfew. Make sure your teen is aware of the consequences of violating these rules.
  7. Never provide alcohol to your teen or their friends at your home, even if you believe that everyone is staying the night.

What can our students do to keep prom safe?

  1. Never drink and drive OR get into a car with someone who has been drinking and/or appears intoxicated. Remember- driving "buzzed" is the same thing as driving drunk.
  2. Arrange for safe transportation before prom night arrives. It is never too early to plan for a safe night.
  3. Stay with a couple of friends and look out for one another.
  4. If you see a friend that has been drinking, make sure they DO NOT drive and help them find a safe way to get home.
  5. If your family tries to talk to you about the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving, LISTEN to them. They care about you and want you to be safe.
  6. If students are drinking, stay clear of bodies of water as accidents can have deadly consequences.

PROM-Ises

PROMise to be safe.

PROMise to make good choices.

PROMise to watch out for one another.

PROMise to make lifelong memories.
