Burgettstown's Brenna Henley was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society at the WACTC this week. Congratulations to all, we are proud of you!

BASD Receives Donated Decommissioned Police Vehicle from Smith TWP.

Thank you, Smith Twp. Supervisors as well as Chief LaRue. With Smith Township's purchase of new police vehicles, the township donated one of the decommissioned vehicles to our school district! We are in the process of having our MSHS students help design graphics for the vehicle and hope to have our technology education students, and perhaps students from WACTC, assist with the process. For now, Officer Fisher and Officer Pope will be using it "unmarked" but you may see the emergency lights on from time to time as they use it at student arrival and dismissal. We feel the vehicle adds to the continual emphasis on a safe school environment.

In Mrs. Bailey's Classroom...

Mrs. Bailey's students enjoyed a "reward" for their efforts during PSSA testing. Classroom games were quite the treat!

In Mrs. Betchart's Music Classroom...

First grade Music Club is learning about a variety of topics, including rhythm, pitch, singing, and movement.

In Dr. Leap's classroom...

Second grade students in Dr. Leap's classroom presented their animal reports this week. They learned about King Cobras and Snowy Owls, just to name a few.

Don't miss out on the cool treats from Kona Ice, which will be coming to our Remake Learning and Spring Concert event on Wednesday, May 8th. Kona Ice will be present from from 5-7 pm at Burgettstown Middle High School. A portion of the proceeds will directly benefit Burgettstown Middle High School Students, so your indulgence will make a difference.

In the BAEC Library...

Miss Markish provided students in grades 3-5 with an opportunity to create watercolor bookmarks as a relaxing activity after PSSA testing.

Celebrating Earth Day...

Kindergarten Students in Mrs. Kozares' classroom followed step-by-step directions to make pinecone bird feeders.

Photo Dump Friday

With the PSSA assessments occurring the past couple weeks, there is no doubt that instructional time is limited. Add to it the beautiful spring weather and distractions can be found all around us. However, our dedicated teachers keep pushing through, mixing test time with a bit of down time while maintaining a pace that will carry us through to the quickly approaching end of the school year. Students in 2nd grade and Kindergarten came together for study buddy time in Mrs. Crabb's and Miss Patterson's combined time; Miss Elek's choral students practiced a piece from The Phantom of the Opera as they prepare for this year's spring show; students in Ms. Nonack's room, as well as Mrs. Grubbs room took a well deserved break from PSSA testing.

A reminder...

We remind students, employees, parents, guardians, and community members that smoking, the possession or use of alcohol or other drugs, and the possession of weapons on school grounds, including outdoor athletic areas, by any individual, is prohibited. These acts are subject to police action and must also be reported to the Department of Education.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO ENTER A SCHOOL BUS WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION

Student and employee safety is extremely important to us. We are constantly looking for ways to make our schools, school grounds, and property safe for all. Recently, we ordered signage that will be placed on all of our school busses, warning that unauthorized boarding will be subject to criminal prosecution. This is not something new, it is simply something we are creating a greater awareness of.

According to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code:

ยง 5517. Unauthorized school bus entry. (a) Offense defined.--A person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official with intent to commit a crime or disrupt or interfere with the driver or a person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official who refuses to disembark after being ordered to do so by the driver commits a misdemeanor of the third degree. (b) Notice.--A school district may place a notice at the entrance of the school bus that warns against unauthorized entry.

Buildings and Grounds Concern Form

Our school district prides itself on providing the best possible learning environment for our students, and school buildings and other facilities that can be a source of pride for the community. We are constantly monitoring the conditions of our schools, athletic complexes and other district-owned property but sometimes we miss things. You can help us by completing this form when you notice something that you think needs our attention. It can be something as basic as noticing that there is a light out in our parking areas, or that the trash receptacles at the baseball field need emptied. Just like you have for your home, we have a running list of items that need our attention. These items get prioritized and acted upon. We may already know about the issue you raise, but if we don't, we can't prioritize it until we do. We are all in this together and your input is greatly appreciated.
