Chester Ronning School
November 2026
Principal's Message
Hello CRS School Community
They say time flies when you are having fun, so we must be having a blast here at Chester Ronning School! I can’t believe that more than two months of the school year have already gone by! Our staff and students have been hard at work on learning outcomes, and it has been exciting to see the quality learning experiences in the classrooms. The Fall Break is right around the corner, and when we return, our Christmas Holiday is on the horizon. The period between these breaks is always an important time in the elementary school year in terms of student learning and output.
Teachers spent a great deal of time doing Alberta Education Screening Assessments during the month of September. We received our Grades 1-3 data quite quickly, as the government has used these assessments previously, so existing data already existed. We recently received our reports for our Grade 4 and 5 students, as these were new assessments and the norms had not yet been set. We now have all our data and are currently sorting through this vast amount of information to determine how best to increase student learning and fill in gaps. All parents should have received a copy of their child’s results by now. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s teacher, and we will do our best to answer your questions.
There is just one more reminder that I like to make around this time of year... Mid to late fall tends to be a time when the weather shifts significantly throughout the day, and we can expect dropping temperatures and snow. Please ensure that students are coming to school prepared for outside recess breaks with weather-appropriate clothing. Inevitably, some students will have identical items, and things do get dropped or forgotten in boot rooms and on the playground, so it is also very helpful when items are labelled. This may or may not be possible for every item, but the more we can keep out of our lost and found bin, the better!
Typically, we stay inside for indoor recesses when the temperatures reach -20 (including wind chill). We do have a Polar Bear club for those who still want to go outside to play between -20 and -26. You always have the opportunity to sign your child up for Polar Bear Club. Many students enjoy this opportunity to commandeer one of our most precious school playground resources: snow.
We are eagerly working behind the scenes to plan for our Christmas Activity Night on December 16th from 5:30 - 7:00. We look forward to seeing you there. As always, please don't hesitate to reach out when you have questions or if there is something that you would like to discuss!
Yours in Education,
Karen Gartner

Outcome-Based Reporting: A New Way of Reporting Student Progress (K–6)
Starting this year, BRSD is moving from traditional grades to Outcomes-Based Reporting for all K-6 students. Here is some information you need to know:
No More Guesswork:
Instead of one general grade for a subject, you’ll see exactly which skills your child has mastered and where they still need work.
Personalized Growth:
Teachers can better identify when a student needs extra help in a specific area, ensuring no one gets left behind.
Better Communication:
You’ll get clearer, more meaningful feedback that shows your child’s actual progress through the curriculum.
Purposeful Learning:
Teachers will have data that will help them design lessons and assessments tailored to specific learning goals.
We’re moving toward a more transparent system that treats every student as an individual, making it easier for you to support their learning at home.
To help you better understand and navigate your child’s Outcomes progress in PowerSchool, BRSD has prepared some resources that will help you with this transition:
Accessing Elementary Student Marks via PowerSchool Parent Portal Web Browser - Parent Guide
Accessing Elementary Student Marks via PowerSchool Parent Portal Web Browser - Parent Video
Accessing Elementary Student Marks via PowerSchool Parent Portal APP - Parent Guide

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or your school’s administration team.

Book Club
Chester Ronning School Council is embarking on a book study of the New York Times Bestseller, "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt to engage our school community in discussion. Funds from our 2025 Alberta School Council Engagement Grant supported purchasing a set of books and the next step is to identify days and times for a 1 hour book club meeting (to be held at Chester Ronning School) that offers the opportunity for maximum possible participation.
If interested in joining the conversation, please take a few moments to identify the times that work best for your schedule assuming a "normal" week at the following link: https://forms.gle/kdojGByG2S4QMPDG7
At the end of fall break (Nov 13), we will identify a "best" window and circulate an invitation to the entire community.

Thank you!!
We have a lot to be thankful for this month. A few HUGH shoutouts to:
Camrose Superstore for providing our top chocolate sellers with gift bags and baskets. A total of 13 prize packs were specially packed and given to those students who sold the most chocolates in their class.
Parents for purchasing those chocolates and helping us fundraise for student activities throughout the year. Your support in buying and eating these chocolates made this fundraiser a huge success!
Mirror Lake Pharmacy for donating several epi pens. These life saving pens are very expensive and our school is required by Occupational Health and Safety to keep these pens in stock. We are so appreciative of this generous donation.

Bus Safety Reminder
Please remember:
City buses do not extend signs or use flashing red lights. It is still necessary and critical to slow down and watch for children entering or exiting the bus.
School buses have several large DANGER ZONES where visibility is limited. These areas which require extra caution include: directly behind the bus, along the curbside, beside the bus on the traffic side where oncoming and passing vehicles may be present, and the walking areas students use while boarding or exiting (path from bus door to curb and crossing in front of bus).
Rural buses use stop signs and red flashing lights while picking up and dropping off students. It is illegal to pass a stopped bus using its stop sign and red flashing lights from either way on the road or highway.
An infraction is often reported by other drivers or can be caught on camera. An offender faces a risk of being fined up to $567 plus 6 demerits.
When a school bus stops to pick up or drop off students, children trust that the bus's flashing lights and stop sign will keep them safe. However, children can be unpredictable and may suddenly run onto the road without looking. Always stop for a school bus when required and remain alert for students crossing the street or walking near the bus.
Mabels Label
How many items did your child lose this year? With this win-win solution, you can create custom labels for your child's items (boots, jackets, lunch kits, etc.) while supporting Chester Ronning's fundraising efforts that go toward supporting our students!
