Trail Guide 7
Tehaleh Heights Elementary
Trailblazer Families,
It's never too early to provide students and families with tools to prevent bullying, both in school and the community. We teach our Kindergarten through Grade 5 how to recognize, report, and refuse bullying. As students master these crucial skills, here at THE we learn to recognize and respond appropriately when we observe or receive a bullying report. Every student is able to build on fundamental learning through our Second Step curriculum.
Our counselor, Mrs. Johnson, visits each classroom to teach students Kelso's Choice and the difference between small problems and big problems. Conflict or disagreement is normal and often happens when children get together. However, hurtful words, gestures, or physical attack are unacceptable ways to deal with conflict and disagreement at school. Our goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these difficult situations. To do this, we are asking students who have minor problems to try at least two of the following ideas:
1. Go to another game or activity.
2. Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other.
3. Walk away from the problem.
4. Ignore the problem behavior.
5. Tell the person to stop the problem behavior.
6. Apologize.
7. Make a deal or compromise.
8. Wait to cool off.
9. Share and take turns.
Definitions:
- Bullying-when someone keeps being mean to someone else on purpose. The person it’s happening to hasn’t been able to make it stop. It is unfair and one-sided.
- "Small" problem-include conflicts that cause smaller feelings of annoyance, embarrassment, boredom, irritation, etc.
- "Big" problem-always need to be taken to an adult. These are situations that are scary, dangerous, or someone could get hurt.

Friendly Reminders
ABSENCES: Please use the@sumnersd.org email or call the office to report absences each day. Both Mrs. Hartness and Ms. Solis in the office receive these emails so we can make sure nothing gets missed!
DISMISSAL: With the colder, rainy and unpredictable weather, we are expecting more families to be changing their daily dismissal plan. We encourage parents to utilize the car loop for dismissal if at all possible. If you are parking and picking up your student, please remember that students need to be accompanied by an adult in the parking lot and to please only use the attended crosswalks.
Please try to call/email with any dismissal changes by 3:15pm. The office is a busy place and we need time to coordinate any changes. We understand last minute changes happen, and your child's safety is our top priority.
(253) 891-6530
WEATHER APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: Please make sure your child is arriving at school in weather appropriate attire that is labeled with their name (so we can return it to them if it is left out at recess). We try to go outside as much as we can for recess even in the cold and light rain. Even when your students are running around outside, it tends to be very windy and can be cold at recess. Jackets and coats are encouraged everyday.
