District News
Vacation time is also vaccination time
Measles outbreaks in several parts of the country continue to make headlines. Minnesota also has experienced cases. Measles is a highly contagious and serious illness that can lead to severe complications including pneumonia, brain damage and death.
The good news is that it is largely preventable through vaccination. The MMR – Measles Mumps Rubella – vaccine is safe and effective. Decades of research and millions of vaccinated children have demonstrated its safety and its ability to protect against these diseases. It's a cornerstone of public health, safeguarding not just your child, but also those in our school who may be too young to be vaccinated or have compromised immune systems.
By getting vaccinated this summer, children, teens and young adults can help protect others, and themselves, by the start of the school year. Please complete these vaccinations this summer and send proof of vaccination to your building nurse. This is especially important for students entering kindergarten, grade 7 and grade 12.
Shopping for school supplies? Save receipts
You can expect school supply sales to pop up this month, so start saving those receipts. Did you know that Minnesota families may get a tax break for the back-to-school supplies they purchase?
Families who purchase qualifying supplies might be eligible to claim K-12 tax benefits on their state income tax return, the Minnesota Department of Revenue says. Two tax benefits can help Minnesota families pay expenses related to their child’s education:
the refundable K-12 Education Credit (income limits apply) and
the K-12 Education Subtraction (no income limits).
To qualify for either program, you must:
Have a qualifying child attending kindergarten through 12th grade at a public, private, or qualified home school.
Have paid “qualified education expenses” during the year for that child’s education.
Note: You may not use the same qualified education expenses to claim both the subtraction and the credit. Learn more by visiting the Minnesota Department of Revenue website links highlighted above or consulting a tax professional.

Help our students shine -- become a tutor
Every child deserves the opportunity to be a successful learner. That’s why Red Wing Public Schools is looking for AmeriCorps tutors to help students build their skills and confidence.
No experience? No problem. Our tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are a recent grad, career changer, stay-at-home parent or retiree, you can make a great tutor. Tutors serve during school hours and spend their days providing students with extra practice and skill building. With the support of an on-site coach, you’ll be trained to deliver activities proven to help students improve in reading or math.
Part-time and full-time positions for the 2025-26 school year are available beginning in August, October and January. Tutors receive a paycheck every two weeks plus an education award to pay for qualifying college tuition or student loans. Tutors aged 55 or older may gift the education award to their child, grandchild, stepchild, step-grandchild, or foster child.
